Translation

✧ [Suhayl wanted the blood money for Abū Baṣīr, and the poetry of Mawhab about that] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Suhayl b. ʿAmr learned of Abū Baṣīr's killing of their companion, the ʿĀmirī, he leaned his back against the Kaʿbah and said: "By God, I will not move my back from the Kaʿbah until this man pays the blood money." Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb said: "By God, this is folly. By God, he will not be paid" (three times). About that, Mawhab b. Riyāḥ Abū Unays, an ally of Banū Zuhrah, said: - Ibn Hishām said: Abū Unays was an Ashʿarī. A stray word from Suhayl came to me and woke me, though I was not asleep. If you seek reproach from me, then reproach me; you are not distant from me. Do you threaten me while ʿAbd Manāf surrounds me, with Makhzūm? Alas for the one you oppose! If you poke at my spear-shaft, you will not find me weak of wood in severe hardships. I vie in nobility of lineage with my people, when the weak one is trampled among them, I fend off. They defended the outskirts, without doubt, to where the inner lands and the raiders are. With every slender mare and every sturdy one, lean ones that have been folded from the chase. To them at al-Khayf, Maʿadd knows, is the pavilion of glory, raised upon pillars.
