Translation
✧ [What afflicted the people regarding the peace and the coming of Abū Jandal] Then while the Messenger of God ﷺ and Suhayl b. ʿAmr were writing the document, Abū Jandal b. Suhayl b. ʿAmr came dragging his chains, having escaped to the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ had set out not doubting the conquest, because of a vision the Messenger of God ﷺ had seen. When they saw what they saw of the peace and the return, and what the Messenger of God ﷺ had taken upon himself, a grave matter entered the people, to the point that they nearly perished. When Suhayl saw Abū Jandal, he went up to him, struck his face, and seized him by the collar. Then he said: 'O Muḥammad, the matter between me and you had been concluded before this one came to you.' He said: 'You have spoken truth.' Then he began to jerk him by his collar and drag him to return him to Quraysh, while Abū Jandal began to cry out at the top of his voice: 'O assembly of Muslims, shall I be returned to the polytheists who will tempt me away from my religion?' That increased the people in what they were already suffering. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'O Abū Jandal, be patient and seek reward, for God will surely grant you and the oppressed with you a relief and a way out. We have concluded a peace between us and the people, and we have given them our word on that, and they have given us the covenant of God, and we will not betray them.' He said: Then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb leapt up with Abū Jandal, walking beside him, saying: 'Be patient, O Abū Jandal, for they are only polytheists, and the blood of one of them is but the blood of a dog.' He said: And he brought the hilt of the sword close to him. He said: ʿUmar said: 'I hoped that he would take the sword and strike his father with it.' He said: But the man spared his father, and the matter was carried out.
