Translation
✧ ʿUmar Denounces the Peace to the Messenger When the matter was settled and nothing remained except the writing, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb sprang up to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, are you not truly the Prophet of Allah? He said: Yes. He said: Are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood? He said: Yes. He said: Are not our slain in Paradise and their slain in the Fire? He said: Yes. He said: Then why should we concede humiliation in our religion and return without Allah having judged between us and them? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger; I do not disobey Him, and He will never cause me to be lost, and He is my Helper." He said: Did you not tell us that we would come to the House and circumambulate it in truth? He said: "Yes, but did I inform you that you would come to it this year?" He said: No. He said: "You will indeed come to it and circumambulate it." Then ʿUmar went to Abū Bakr in anger, unable to contain himself, and said: O Abū Bakr, is this not truly the Prophet of Allah? He said: Yes. He said: Are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood? Are not our slain in Paradise and their slain in the Fire? He said: Yes. He said: Then why should we concede humiliation in our religion and return without Allah having judged between us and them? He said: O man, he is the Messenger of Allah, and he does not disobey his Lord, and He is his Helper; so hold fast to his stirrup until you die. By Allah, he is upon the truth. In another wording: For he is the Messenger of Allah. ʿUmar said: And I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah. He said: Did he not tell us that we would come to the House and circumambulate it? He said: Yes, but did he inform you that you would come to it this year? He said: No. He said: Then you will come to it and circumambulate it. ʿUmar found these terms a grave matter, and he said, as in the Ṣaḥīḥ: By Allah, I have not doubted since I embraced Islam except on that day. He kept arguing back against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ ؓ said: Will you not listen, O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, to what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is saying? Seek refuge in Allah from Satan and suspect your own judgment. ʿUmar said: I began to seek refuge in Allah from Satan out of shame, and nothing ever afflicted me like that day. I performed deeds—meaning righteous ones—to atone for what had passed of my hesitation in initially complying with the command, as reported by Ibn Isḥāq and Ibn ʿUmar al-Aslamī. ʿUmar said: I continued to give charity, fast, pray, and free slaves because of what I had done that day, fearing the words I had spoken, until I hoped that it would be good. Al-Bazzār narrated from ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ that he said: Suspect opinion in matters of religion, for I saw myself rejecting the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with my own opinion, and I did not fail to seek the truth. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was satisfied, but I refused, until he said: "O ʿUmar, do you see me satisfied while you refuse?"
