Translation
✧ An account of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ journeying to al-Ḥudaybiyah by a route other than that of Khālid b. al-Walīd, and the signs that occurred in that. Al-Bazzār narrated with a chain whose men are trustworthy, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī ؓ in abridged form, and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar from his shaykhs said: When evening came upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: "Veer right in this ʿaṣl," and in another narration: "Take the path to the right through the midst of the ḥamḍ, for Khālid b. al-Walīd is at al-Ghamīm with a cavalry of Quraysh as a vanguard." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked meeting him, and he was merciful toward them, so he said: "Veer right. Which of you knows the mountain pass of Dhāt al-Ḥanẓal?" Buraydah b. al-Ḥaṣīb—with a ḥāʾ bearing ḍammah, then a ṣād bearing fatḥah, both unpointed, then a tāʾ with two dots beneath, then a wāw, then a bāʾ with one dot, both unpointed, then a tāʾ with two dots beneath—al-Aslamī said: "I, O Messenger of Allah, know it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Go ahead of us." So Buraydah took them into the ʿaṣl—toward the mountains of Sarāwiʿ before sunset. By Allah, Khālid was not aware of them until they were at the dust of the army, and he went off galloping as a warner to Quraysh. Buraydah led them along a rugged, stony path between mountain passes, and he went a little way, with stones deflecting him and trees catching him, until it was as if he had never known those two at all. He said: By Allah, I used to traverse it several times in a week. Then Ḥamzah b. ʿAmr al-Aslamī dismounted and led them a little, then he fell into the thick of the trees so that it was not known where he was heading. Then ʿAmr b. ʿAbadnahum al-Aslamī dismounted and went ahead of them until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at the pass and said: "Is this the pass of Dhāt al-Ḥanẓal?" ʿAmr said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." When he had brought him to its top, he descended with him. ʿAmr said: By Allah, my own self used to concern me; it was only like a sandal-strap, but it widened for me when it emerged, and it became wide, beaten roads. That night the people were journeying all together, turning aside from its width and conversing, and that night it became lit until it was as if we were in moonlight. Abū Saʿīd said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of al-Ḥudaybiyah until, when we were at ʿUsfān, we traveled from the latter part of the night until we came upon the ʿaqabah of Dhāt al-Ḥanẓal. Jābir said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever ascends the pass of al-Mirār, there will be remitted from him what was remitted from the Children of Israel." The first to ascend were horsemen of the Khazraj, then the people hastened after them. Abū Saʿīd said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The likeness of this pass tonight is as the likeness of the gate about which Allah, exalted is He, said to the Children of Israel: 'And enter the gate prostrating and say: Ḥiṭṭah; We shall forgive you your sins' (al-Baqarah 58)." Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Muslims came out of the rugged land and reached a smooth land, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Say: We seek Allah's forgiveness and we repent to Him." They said that, and he said: "By Allah, it is indeed the ḥiṭṭah that was offered to the Children of Israel, but they did not say it." Abū Saʿīd said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No one will pass this pass tonight but he will be forgiven." When we descended, we halted, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we fear that Quraysh will see our fires." He said: "They will not see you." When morning came, he led us in the dawn prayer, then said: "By Him in whose hand is my soul, the entire caravan has been forgiven except for one little rider on a red camel upon whom the people's saddlebags were loaded, though he is not one of them." Jābir said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "All of you are forgiven except the owner of the red camel." Abū Saʿīd said: He was sought in the army, and he was with Saʿīd b. Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl. The man was from Banū Ḍamrah, from the people of the seacoast, and was thought to be one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It was said to Saʿīd: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said such-and-such." Saʿīd said to him: "Woe to you! Go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that he may seek forgiveness for you." Jābir said: We said to him: "Come, let the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seek forgiveness for you." He said: "By Allah, finding my lost camel is dearer to me than having your companion seek forgiveness for me." Abū Saʿīd said: He said: "My camel, by Allah, is more important to me than his seeking forgiveness for me," since he had lost a camel of his. He went off seeking his camel after he had searched the army and sought it among them. While he was in the mountains of Sarāwiʿ, his sandal slipped with him, and he fell and died, and no one knew of him until the wild beasts had eaten him. Abū Saʿīd said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on that day: "The people of Yemen will come to you like fragments of cloud. They are the best of the people of the earth."
