The Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah
قَالَ قتادة: قُلْتُ لِسَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ: كَمْ كَانَ الَّذِينَ شَهِدُوا بَيْعَةَ الرِّضْوَانِ ؟ قَالَ: خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ مِائَةٍ. قَالَ: قُلْتُ: فَإِنَّ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: كَانُوا أَرْبَعَ عَشْرَةَ مِائَةٍ. قَالَ: يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ، أَوْهَمَ، هُوَ حَدَّثَنِي أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ مِائَةٍ. قُلْتُ: وَقَدْ صَحَّ عَنْ جابر الْقَوْلَانِ، وَصَحَّ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُمْ نَحَرُوا عَامَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ سَبْعِينَ بَدَنَةً، الْبَدَنَةُ عَنْ سَبْعَةٍ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: كَمْ كُنْتُمْ ؟ قَالَ: أَلْفًا وَأَرْبَعَمِائَةٍ بِخَيْلِنَا وَرَجْلِنَا. يَعْنِي فَارِسَهُمْ وَرَاجِلَهُمْ، وَالْقَلْبُ إِلَى هَذَا أَمْيَلُ، وَهُوَ قَوْلُ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ وَمَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ وَسَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ فِي أَصَحِّ الرِّوَايَتَيْنِ، وَقَوْلُ المسيب بن حزن: قَالَ شعبة: عَنْ قتادة، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ أَلْفًا وَأَرْبَعَمِائَةٍ. وَعَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مِمَّنْ بَايَعَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ، فَرَجَعْنَا إِلَيْهَا الْعَامَ الْمُقْبِلَ، فَعَمِيَتْ عَلَيْنَا. وَقَالَ الْبُخَارِيُّ أَيْضًا: عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ: انْطَلَقْتُ حَاجًّا، فَمَرَرْتُ بِقَوْمٍ يُصَلُّونَ، فَقُلْتُ: مَا هَذَا الْمَسْجِدُ ؟ قَالُوا: هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةُ، حَيْثُ بَايَعَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بَيْعَةَ الرِّضْوَانِ. فَأَتَيْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيَّبِ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ، فَقَالَ سَعِيدٌ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي أَنَّهُ كَانَ فِيمَنْ بَايَعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ. وَفِي صَحِيحِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعُمَرُ آخِذٌ بِيَدِهِ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ - وَهِيَ سَمُرَةٌ - فَبَايَعْنَاهُ
Translation
✧ Qatādah said: I said to Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab: How many were those who witnessed the Pledge of Riḍwān? He said: Fifteen hundred. He said: I said: But Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh said: They were fourteen hundred. He said: May God have mercy on him; he erred. He himself narrated to me that they were fifteen hundred. I say: Both statements are authentically reported from Jābir, and it is authentically reported from him that on the day of al-Ḥudaybiyah they sacrificed seventy badanahs, each badanah for seven. So it was said to him: How many were you? He said: One thousand four hundred, with our horses and our footmen—meaning their cavalry and their infantry. The heart inclines more to this, and it is the statement of al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib, Maʿqil b. Yasār, and Salamah b. al-Akwaʿ in the more correct of the two narrations, and the statement of al-Musayyab b. Ḥazn. Shuʿbah said: From Qatādah, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, from his father: We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ under the tree, one thousand four hundred. And from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, from his father, that he was among those who pledged allegiance under the tree. We returned to it the following year, but it was hidden from us. Al-Bukhārī also said: From Ṭāriq b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said: I set out as a pilgrim and passed by some people praying. I said: What is this mosque? They said: This is the tree where the Prophet ﷺ accepted the Pledge of Riḍwān. I came to Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab and informed him. Saʿīd said: My father narrated to me that he was among those who pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ under the tree. And in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, from Jābir, he said: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ while ʿUmar was holding his hand under a tree—it was a samurah tree—and we pledged allegiance to him.
