✧ [Ḥassān's poem about Dhū Qarad] Among the poetic verses said concerning the Day of Dhū Qarad is the saying of Ḥassān b. Thābit: Had it not been for what she encountered—and her vultures touched—by the south of Sāyah yesterday in al-Taqwād, We would have met you, carrying every fully armed man, Protector of his charge, glorious in ancestry. And it would have pleased the sons of the foundling woman that we Were at peace on the morning of the horsemen of al-Miqdād. We were eight, and they were a huge host, A mighty throng, so they were pierced with spears, scattered apart. We were of the people who follow them closely, And who advance the rein of every swift steed. Nay, by the Lord of the dancing camels to Minā, As they traverse the breadth of the mountain passes— Until we make the horses urinate in your courtyards, And return with the women and children as spoils. At a gentle pace with every drawn-up horse and long-bodied mare, In every battlefield they turned aside and pursued. Their hind hooves wore away, and their backs shone— One day they are led away, and one day it is pursuit. Thus indeed our horses are milk-fed, And war is kindled by the wind of dawn raiders. And our swords are white-edged, polished bright, They strip away iron shields and the head of the scouting warrior. God seized them for violating His sanctuary, And by the might of the Merciful, with the mountain passes. They were dwelling in ease, but they were changed On the days of Dhū Qarad into faces of slaves. [Saʿd's anger at Ḥassān and Ḥassān's attempt to appease him] Ibn Hishām said: When Ḥassān recited these verses, Saʿd b. Zayd became angry with him and swore never to speak to him again. He said: He went off to my horses and my horsemen and attributed them to al-Miqdād. So Ḥassān apologized to him and said: By God, I did not intend that, but the rhyme happened to fit the name of al-Miqdād. And he recited some verses with which to please Saʿd: If you want the strongest and hardiest, Or one of great service, then choose Saʿd. Saʿd b. Zayd is not to be broken, never! But Saʿd would not accept it from him, and it availed nothing. [Another poem by Ḥassān concerning the Day of Dhū Qarad] And Ḥassān b. Thābit said concerning the Day of Dhū Qarad: ʿUyaynah thought, when he raided it, That he would demolish palaces there. You were proven false in what you had believed true, And you said: We shall gain great spoil. You disliked Madinah when you raided it, And you heard the roaring of lions therein. So they fled swiftly like the running of ostriches, And they did not uncover a single mat. A commander over us is the Messenger of the King— How beloved to us is that commander! A Messenger whose message we believe, And who recites a Book, radiant and illuminating. [Kaʿb's poem concerning the Day of Dhū Qarad] And Kaʿb b. Mālik said concerning the Day of Dhū Qarad, about the horsemen: Do the sons of the foundling woman think that we, On horseback, are not like them among the horsemen? We are a people who do not regard killing as a disgrace, And we do not turn aside at the thrusting of spears. Truly we honor the guest from the tops of the peaks, And we strike the head of the arrogant boaster. We repel the warriors of the marked ones when they boast, With a blow that dispels the pride of the laggard. With every young man who protects his charge, glorious, Generous, like a wolf of the ghāḍa tree, seizing his prey. They defend their lineages and their inherited wealth, With white swords that cleave heads beneath the helmets. Ask the Banū Badr when you meet them, What the brothers did on the day of conflict. When you go forth, tell the truth to those you meet, And do not conceal your news in the gatherings. Say: We slipped away from the claws of a lurking lion Who has a burning rage in his chest that he has not yet exercised. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd recited to me his verse: "Truly we honor the guest." [Shaddād's poem for ʿUyaynah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Shaddād b. ʿĀriḍ al-Jushamī said concerning the Day of Dhū Qarad, for ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn—and ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn was given the kunyah Abū Mālik: Why did you not return, Abū Mālik, When your horses were retreating, being killed? You remembered the return to ʿAsjar, But how far away now is the homecoming! You reassured yourself with a swift young camel, One that flees across the open space when let loose. When the north winds drive it toward you, It boils like a cooking pot flaring up. But when you recognized the servants of God, The first did not wait for the last. You recognized horsemen who had been trained To pursue warriors when they charge. When they drive the horses, the horses distress with them, Loose as they gallop; and if they are pursued, they dismount. Then they seek refuge in the midst of the battlefield With white swords, polished by the sword-polisher.
