The Conversion of 'Amr b. al-'As, Khalid b. al-Walid, and 'Uthman b. Talhah
Translation
✧ He said: So I parted from them as if I were heading for some need, and I made for the place of the ships, and I found a ship that had been loaded and was about to be pushed off. He said: I boarded it with them, and they pushed it off until they reached al-Shuʿaybah. I disembarked from the ship with some money I had, bought a camel, and set out for Madinah until I passed by Marr al-Ẓahrān. Then I went on until, when I was at al-Hadah, there were two men who had preceded me by not much, seeking a stopping place. One of them was inside the tent, and the other was holding the two riding camels. He said: I looked, and there was Khālid b. al-Walīd. He said: I said, “Where are you heading?” He said, “To Muḥammad. The people have entered Islam, and no one of any worth remains. By God, if I stayed, we would be seized by the neck as a hyena is seized in its den.” I said, “By God, I too have intended Muḥammad and intended Islam.” Then ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah came out and welcomed me, and we all dismounted at the stopping place. Then we traveled together until we came to Madinah. I shall never forget the words of a man we met at the well of Abū ʿInabah, crying out, “O Rabāḥ, O Rabāḥ, O Rabāḥ!” We took his words as a good omen and were delighted. Then he looked at us, and I heard him say, “Makkah has yielded its reins after these two.” I thought he meant me and Khālid b. al-Walīd. Then he turned away and went quickly to the mosque, and I thought he was giving good news to the Messenger of God ﷺ of our arrival. It was as I thought. We made our camels kneel at al-Ḥarrah, put on the best of our clothes, and then the call to the afternoon prayer was given. We went until we came before him, and his face was radiant, and the Muslims around him rejoiced at our conversion. Khālid b. al-Walīd stepped forward and pledged allegiance, then ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah stepped forward and pledged allegiance, then I stepped forward. By God, no sooner had I sat before him than I could not raise my eyes to him out of shyness of him. He said: I pledged allegiance to him on condition that my past sins be forgiven, and what was to come did not occur to me. He said: “Islam wipes out what was before it, and emigration wipes out what was before it.” He said: By God, from the time we embraced Islam, the Messenger of God ﷺ did not prefer any of his companions over me and Khālid b. al-Walīd in any matter that distressed him. We held the same standing with Abū Bakr, and I held that standing with ʿUmar, and ʿUmar was like a reprover toward Khālid. Al-Wāqidī said, from his shaykh ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd: I said to Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb, “Did he specify for you when ʿAmr and Khālid arrived?” He said, “No, except that he said before the conquest.” I said, “My father informed me that ʿAmr, Khālid, and ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah arrived at the new moon of Ṣafar in the year eight.” The path of the conversion of Khālid b. al-Walīd Al-Wāqidī said: Yaḥyā b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith b. Hishām narrated to me, saying: I heard my father narrating from Khālid b. al-Walīd, who said: When God willed for me what He willed of good, He cast Islam into my heart and granted me right guidance. I said: I have witnessed all these battles against Muḥammad ﷺ, and in no battle I witnessed did I turn away except that I saw in myself that I was positioned in something worthless, and that Muḥammad would prevail. When the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to al-Ḥudaybiyah, I went out among a cavalry force of the polytheists, and I met the Messenger of God ﷺ with his companions at ʿUsfān. I stood facing him and exposed myself to him, and he prayed the noon prayer with his companions in front of us. We resolved to raid them, but it was not granted to us—and there was good in that—for he became aware of what was in our souls of intending him, and he prayed the afternoon prayer with his companions as the prayer of fear. That made a great impression on us, and I said, “The man is protected.” He withdrew from us, turned aside from the path of our cavalry, and took to the right. Then when Quraysh made a treaty with him at al-Ḥudaybiyah and Quraysh fended him off with ease, I said to myself: What is left? Where is the way out? To the Negus? He has followed Muḥammad, and his companions are safe with him. Should I go out to Heraclius? Should I leave my religion for Christianity or Judaism and live among non-Arabs as a follower? Or should I stay in my home among those who remain? While I was in that state, the Messenger of God ﷺ entered Makkah for the compensatory ʿumrah, and I hid myself and did not witness his entry. My brother al-Walīd b. al-Walīd had entered with the Prophet ﷺ during the compensatory ʿumrah, and he looked for me but did not find me. He wrote me a letter, and in it was: In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. To proceed: I have seen nothing more astonishing than the loss of your judgment concerning Islam, while your intellect is your intellect! And could anyone be ignorant of the like of Islam? The Messenger of God ﷺ asked me about you and said, “Where is Khālid?” I said, “God will bring him.” He said, “Someone like him cannot be ignorant of Islam. If he were to make his prowess and his sharpness with the Muslims, it would be better for him, and we would put him ahead of others.” So make up, my brother, what you have missed, for you have missed virtuous stations. He said: When his letter came to me, I was stirred to set out, and it increased my desire for Islam, and I was pleased by the Messenger of God’s ﷺ asking about me. I saw in a dream as if I were in a narrow, barren land, and I went out to a green, wide land. I said: This is indeed a vision. When I came to Madinah, I said: I will mention it to Abū Bakr. He said: “Your going out is what God guided you to Islam, and the narrowness was the polytheism you were in.” He said: When I resolved to go out to the Messenger of God ﷺ, I said: Whom shall I accompany to the Messenger of God ﷺ? I met Ṣafwān b. Umayyah and said: O Abū Wahb, do you not see what we are in? We are but eaters of a head, and Muḥammad has prevailed over the Arabs and the non-Arabs. If we went to Muḥammad and followed him, the honor of Muḥammad would be honor for us. But he refused most strongly and said: “Even if no one remained but me, I would never follow him.” So we parted, and I said: This is a man whose brother and father were killed at Badr. Then I met ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl and said to him the like of what I had said to Ṣafwān b. Umayyah, and he said to me the like of what Ṣafwān b. Umayyah had said. I said: Keep my affair secret. He said: “I will not mention it.” I went out to my dwelling and ordered my riding camel, and I set out with it until I met ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah. I said: This man is a friend of mine, so if I mentioned to him what I hoped for... Then I remembered those of his forefathers who had been killed, and I disliked to remind him. Then I said: What harm is there, for I am departing from this hour? So I mentioned to him what matters had come to, and I said: We are but in the position of a fox in a burrow; if a bucket of water were poured into it, it would come out. And I said to him something like what I had said to my companion. He was quick to answer and said: “I set out this morning intending to go, and this is my riding camel, kneeling at Fakhkh.” He said: He and I agreed to meet at Yaʾjaj; if he arrived before me, he would wait, and if I arrived before him, I would wait for him. He said: We set out in the darkness before dawn, and dawn had not yet risen when we met at Yaʾjaj. Then we went on until we reached al-Hadah, and we found ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ there. He said: “Welcome to the company.” We said: “And to you.” He said: “Where are you heading?” We said: “And what brought you out?” He said: “And what brought you out?” We said: “Entering Islam and following Muḥammad ﷺ.” He said: “That is what brought me.” So we traveled together until we entered Madinah, and we made our riding camels kneel at the back of al-Ḥarrah. The Messenger of God ﷺ was told of us and rejoiced at us. I put on the best of my clothes and went to the Messenger of God ﷺ. My brother met me and said: “Hurry, for the Messenger of God ﷺ has been told of you and rejoiced at your coming, and he is waiting for you.” So we hurried on foot, and I came before him, and he kept smiling at me until I stood before him. I greeted him with the greeting of prophethood, and he returned the greeting with a bright face. I said: I bear witness that there is no god but God, and that you are the Messenger of God. He said: “Come forward.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Praise be to God who has guided you. I saw in you intelligence, and I hoped that it would not deliver you except to good.” I said: O Messenger of God, you have seen what I witnessed of those battles against you, opposing the truth, so pray to God that He forgive them for me. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Islam wipes out what was before it.” I said: O Messenger of God, on that condition? He said: “O God, forgive Khālid b. al-Walīd all that he committed in obstructing Your path.” Khālid said: ʿUthmān and ʿAmr stepped forward and pledged allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: Our arrival was in Ṣafar of the year eight. He said: By God, the Messenger of God ﷺ did not prefer anyone of his companions over me in any matter that distressed him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Someone I do not suspect narrated to me that ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah b. Abī Ṭalḥah was with them and became Muslim when they became Muslim. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī al-Zibʿarā al-Sahmī said: I ask ʿUthmān b. Ṭalḥah by our oath and the place where the people's sandals are cast near the kissing-place, and by what the fathers bound of every oath, and Khālid is not absolved of the like of it. Do you seek a key to a house other than your own, and what do you seek from a house of rooted glory? Do not trust Khālid after this, or ʿUthmān—they have come with the grim, tangled calamity. I say: Their conversion was after al-Ḥudaybiyah, for Khālid b. al-Walīd was on that day among the cavalry of the polytheists, as will be explained later. So mentioning this section concerning their conversion after that would be more fitting, but we have mentioned it following the Imām Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, may God Almighty have mercy on him, because ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ's first going to the Negus was after the Battle of the Trench, and it appears that he went in the remainder of the year five. And God knows best.
