Translation
✧ [His asking the Negus regarding the killing of 'Amr al-Damri and the latter's reply to him] By Allah, while we were with him, 'Amr b. Umayyah al-Damri came to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him to him concerning the affair of Ja'far and his companions. It is also said that he sent him with a letter he had written, marrying him to Umm Habibah bt. Abi Sufyan. He entered upon him and then departed from his presence. He said: I said to my companions, 'This is 'Amr b. Umayyah al-Damri. If I were to enter upon the Negus and ask him for him, and he gave him to me, I would strike his neck. If I did that, Quraysh would see that I had sufficed them by killing the messenger of Muhammad.' He said: I entered upon him and prostrated to him as I used to do. He said, 'Welcome to my friend. Have you brought me any gift from your land?' He said: I said, 'Yes, O king, I have brought you much leather.' He said: Then I brought it near to him, and it pleased him and he desired it. Then I said to him, 'O king, I have seen a man who left your presence, and he is the messenger of a man who is our enemy. Give him to me so that I may kill him, for he has struck down our nobles and our best men.' He said: He became angry, then stretched out his hand and struck his nose with it, a blow that I thought had broken it. Had the earth split open for me, I would have entered it out of fear of him. Then I said to him, 'O king, by Allah, had I thought that you disliked this, I would not have asked it of you.' He said: He felt ashamed and said, 'O 'Amr, do you ask me to give you the messenger of one to whom comes the Greatest Namus, the one who used to come to Moses, and the one who used to come to Jesus, so that you may kill him?!' 'Amr said: Then Allah changed my heart from what I had been upon, and I said to myself, 'The Arabs and the non-Arabs know this truth, and do you oppose it?!' Then I said, 'Do you bear witness, O king, to this?' He said, 'Yes, I bear witness to it before Allah, O 'Amr. So obey me and follow him, for by Allah, he is upon the truth and he will certainly prevail over those who oppose him, just as Moses prevailed over Pharaoh and his hosts.' I said, 'Will you pledge allegiance to him on my behalf for Islam?' He said, 'Yes.' He extended his hand and pledged allegiance to me for Islam. Then he called for a basin and washed the blood from me, and clothed me with garments, for my garments had become filled with blood, so I cast them off. Then I went out to my companions. When they saw the clothing of the Negus, they rejoiced at that and said, 'Did you attain from your friend what you wanted?' I said to them, 'I disliked to speak to him on the first occasion, and I said, I will return to him.' They said, 'The right opinion is what you see.'
