The Expedition of Banu Qurayzah in the Year Five
وَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ سُعْدَى: يَا مَعْشَرَ يَهُودَ، إِنَّكُمْ قَدْ حَالَفْتُمْ مُحَمَّدًا عَلَى مَا حَالَفْتُمُوهُ عَلَيْهِ، فَنَقَضْتُمْ عَهْدَهُ الَّذِي كَانَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ، فَلَمْ أَدْخُلْ فِيهِ، وَلَمْ أَشْرَكْكُمْ فِي غَدْرِكُمْ، فَإِنْ أَبَيْتُمْ أَنْ تَدْخُلُوا مَعَهُ فَاثْبُتُوا عَلَى الْيَهُودِيَّةِ وَأَعْطُوا الْجِزْيَةَ فَوَ اللَّهِ مَا أَدْرِي يَقْبَلُهَا أَمْ لَا، قَالُوا: فَنَحْنُ لَا نُقِرُّ لِلْعَرَبِ بِخَرْجٍ فِي رِقَابِنَا يَأْخُذُونَهُ، الْقَتْلُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِنْكُمْ. وَخَرَجَ فِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ مَعَ ابْنَيْ سَعْيَةَ، فَمَرَّ بِحَرَسِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعَلَيْهِمْ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، فَقَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: مَنْ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: عَمْرُو بْنُ سُعْدَى، قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: مَرَّ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمُنِي إِقَالَةَ عَثَرَاتِ الْكِرَامِ، وَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهُ، وَخَرَجَ حَتَّى أَتَى مَسْجِدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَبَاتَ بِهِ حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ غَدَا فَلَمْ يُدْرَ أَنَّى هُوَ حَتَّى السَّاعَةِ فَذُكِرَ شَأْنُهُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ. فَقَالَ: «ذَاكَ رَجُلٌ نَجَّاهُ اللَّهُ بِوَفَائِهِ».
Translation
✧ And ʿAmr b. Suʿdā said: O assembly of Jews, you have indeed entered into a pact with Muḥammad upon that which you covenanted with him, then you broke his covenant that was between you and him. So I did not enter into it, and I did not make you partners in your treachery. If you refuse to enter with him, then remain steadfast upon Judaism and give the jizyah, for by God, I do not know whether he will accept it or not. They said: We will not acknowledge any tribute for the Arabs upon our necks that they take from us; killing is better than that. He said: Then I am quit of you. And he went out that night with the two sons of Saʿyah, and he passed by the guard of the Messenger of God ﷺ, over whom was Muḥammad b. Maslamah. Muḥammad said: Who is this? He said: ʿAmr b. Suʿdā. Muḥammad said: Pass, O God, do not deprive me of overlooking the slips of the noble. And he let him go on his way. And he went out until he came to the mosque of the Messenger of God ﷺ and spent the night there until morning. When morning came, he departed, and it was not known where he was, up to this hour. So his affair was mentioned to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: "That is a man whom God saved by his loyalty."
