The Expedition of Banu Qurayzah in the Year Five
[ سَأَلَ الرَّسُولُ عَمَّنْ مَرَّ بِهِمْ فَقِيلَ دِحْيَةُ فَعَرَفَ أَنَّهُ جِبْرِيلُ ] وَمَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِنَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ بِالصَّوْرَيْنِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَصِلَ إلَى بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ، فَقَالَ: هَلْ مَرَّ بِكُمْ أَحَدٌ ؟ قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قَدْ مَرَّ بِنَا دِحْيَةُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ الْكَلْبِيُّ، عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ بَيْضَاءَ عَلَيْهَا رِحَالَةٌ، عَلَيْهَا قَطِيفَةٌ دِيبَاجٌ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: ذَلِكَ جِبْرِيلُ، بُعِثَ إلَى بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ يُزَلْزِلُ بِهِمْ حُصُونَهُمْ، وَيَقْذِفُ الرُّعْبَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ قَالَ أَنَسٌ ؓ فِيمَا رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ: كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْغُبَارِ سَاطِعًا فِي زُقَاقِ بَنِي غَنْمٍ - مَوْكِبَ جِبْرِيلَ حِينَ سَارَ إِلَى بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ.. انْتَهَى. قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: فَرَجَعْتُ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - مَنْ ذَاكَ الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي كُنْتَ تُكَلِّمُهُ ؟ قَالَ: «وَرَأَيْتُهُ» ؟ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ، قَالَ، «لِمَنْ تَشَبَّهْتِ» ؟ قُلْتُ: بِدِحْيَةَ بْنِ خَلِيفَةَ الْكَلْبِيِّ، قَالَ: «ذَاكَ جِبْرِيلُ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَمْضِيَ إِلَى بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ ».
Translation
✧ [The Messenger asked about who passed by them, and it was said: Dihyah, and he knew it was Jibril.] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a group of his companions at al-Sawrayn before reaching Banu Qurayzah, and said: "Has anyone passed by you?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, Dihyah b. Khalifah al-Kalbi passed by us, on a white mule with a saddle, upon it a velvet brocade." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "That was Jibril, sent to Banu Qurayzah to shake their fortresses with them, and to cast terror into their hearts." Anas ؓ said, as al-Bukhari narrated: "It is as if I am looking at the dust rising in the alley of Banu Ghanm — the procession of Jibril when he went to Banu Qurayzah."... End. ʿAʾishah said: "So I returned, and when he entered, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, who was that man you were talking to?' He said: 'Did you see him?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Who did you think he resembled?' I said: 'Dihyah b. Khalifah al-Kalbi.' He said: 'That was Jibril. He commanded me to proceed to Banu Qurayzah.'"
