The Expedition of Banu Qurayzah in the Year Five

Translation

✧ From ʿAbd Allāh: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from a military expedition, Hajj, or ʿUmrah, he would begin by proclaiming Allāhu akbar, then say: "There is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things capable. We are returning, repentant, worshipping, prostrating, praising our Lord. Allah has fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates alone. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed from the Trench, returning to Madinah with the Muslims, and they laid down their weapons. At noon, Jibrīl came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — as al-Zuhrī narrated to me — wearing a turban of brocade, on a mule with a saddle covered by a velvet cloth of silk brocade. He said: "Have you laid down your weapons, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." Jibrīl said: "The angels have not yet laid down their weapons, and I have only now returned from pursuing the people. Allah commands you, O Muḥammad, to march against Banū Qurayẓah, for I am heading toward them and will shake them." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered a muezzin, who called out among the people: "Whoever hears and obeys should not pray ʿAṣr except among Banū Qurayẓah." And from ʿĀʾishah, who said: When the Prophet ﷺ returned from the Trench, laid down his weapons, and bathed, Jibrīl came to him and said: "You have laid down your weapons, but by Allah we have not laid them down. Go out against them." He said: "To where?" He said: "Here," and he pointed toward Banū Qurayẓah. So the Prophet ﷺ went out against them. And also from ʿĀʾishah: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished with the confederates, he entered the bathing place to bathe. Jibrīl came, and I saw him through the gap in the door, with dust bound around his head. He said: "O Muḥammad, have you laid down your weapons?" He said: "We have not yet laid down our weapons. March against Banū Qurayẓah." Then al-Bukhārī said: From Anas b. Mālik, who said: It is as if I can see the dust rising in the alley of Banū Ghanm, the procession of Jibrīl when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marched toward Banū Qurayẓah.
