The Expedition of al-Khandaq (the Confederates)

✧ Mention of the killing of ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Wudd al-ʿĀmirī by ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ Al-Bayhaqī narrated from Ibn Isḥāq, and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar from his shaykhs: that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained stationed while the polytheists besieged him. Ibn Isḥāq said: for twenty-some nights, close to a month, and there was no fighting between them because of the trench that intervened, except for shooting arrows and stones. Then the leaders and chiefs of the polytheists agreed to go out all together to fight the Muslims. So Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl, Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb, Khālid b. al-Walīd, ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, Nawfal b. Muʿāwiyah al-Daylamī—and they later became Muslims—Nawfal b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Makhzūmī, and ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Wudd went out with a group, and with them were the chiefs of Ghaṭafān: ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn, al-Ḥārith b. ʿAwf, and Masʿūd b. Rukhayl—with the dotted khāʾ and diminutive form—and the three later became Muslims. And from Banū Asad their chiefs also came, and they left the men behind as substitutes. They went around the trench seeking a narrow spot, intending to force their horses through toward the Prophet ﷺ. They aimed for a narrow place in the trench that the Muslims had neglected, and they urged their horses on and struck them until they plunged through. So ʿIkrimah, Nawfal b. ʿAbd Allāh, Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb, Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb, and ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Wudd crossed over, while the rest of the polytheists remained behind the trench and did not cross. It was said to Abū Sufyān: Will you not cross? He said: You have crossed; if you need us, we will cross. The horses of those who had entered wheeled about in the salt marsh between the trench and Salʿ, and a group of Muslims came out until they seized the gap through which they had forced their horses, and the horsemen came galloping toward them. ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Wudd had fought on the day of Badr until wounds disabled him and he was left among the slain, so he did not witness Uḥud. He forbade himself from using oil until he should take revenge on Muḥammad and his companions, and on that day he was old. Ibn Saʿd said: He had reached ninety years, and he was one of the renowned brave men and heroes of the polytheists. When the day of the trench came, he came out with his head uncovered, marked so that his place might be seen. When he and his horse stood still, he called for single combat. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib stood up and asked permission of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission, and gave him his sword and tied his turban, and said: "O Allah, aid him against him." So he walked toward him while saying: Do not be hasty, for one has come to you answering your call, not powerless, with purpose and insight, And truthfulness is among the best of qualities. I hope that I may establish Over you the wailing women of funerals, from a wide-cutting blow whose Memory will remain at times of turmoil. Then he said to him: O ʿAmr, you used to say in the Age of Ignorance: No one calls me to one of three things but I accept it. He said: Yes. So ʿAlī said: I call you to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, and to submit to the Lord of the Worlds. He said: O son of my brother, put this off from me. He said: And another: that you return to your land, for if Muḥammad is truthful, you will be the happiest of people through him, and if he is a liar, then what you want will be. He said: This is something that the women of Quraysh will never speak of, and you have vowed what you vowed and forbidden yourself oil. He said: Then the third? He said: Single combat. So ʿAmr laughed and said: This is a trait I did not think any Arab would seek from me. Who are you? He said: I am ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. He said: O son of my brother, among your paternal uncles are those older than you, for I dislike shedding your blood. So ʿAlī ؓ said: But I, by Allah, do not dislike shedding your blood. So ʿAmr became angry, dismounted from his horse and hamstrung it, drew his sword as if it were a flame of fire, then came toward ʿAlī in anger. ʿAlī met him with his shield, and one of them drew near to the other, and dust rose between them. ʿAmr struck him, and ʿAlī warded off the blow with the shield, but it split it, and the sword stuck in it, and it struck his head and gashed it. Al-Balādhurī said: It is said that ʿAlī was never wounded. And ʿAlī struck him on the muscle of his shoulder, and he fell, and dust rose. It is also said: He thrust him in his collarbone until it came out from his side, and he fell. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the takbīr and knew that ʿAlī had killed him. Thereupon ʿAlī ؓ said: The support of stones comes from the foolishness of his opinion, and I supported the Lord of Muḥammad with my right judgment. So I returned when I left him thrown down, like a trunk among hillocks and mounds. And I refrained from his clothes, though if I had been the one stripped, my clothes would have been taken as spoils. Do not think that Allah will forsake His religion and His Prophet, O assembly of the confederates. Ibn Hishām said: Most of the scholars of poetry doubt that these verses are by ʿAlī ؓ. Then ʿAlī ؓ came toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his face beaming, and no Arab had a coat of mail better than his, yet he did not strip him because he had shielded himself with his private parts, so he felt ashamed. And their horses went out in defeat until they plunged into the trench. Ibn Hishām said: ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl threw down his spear that day while fleeing from ʿAmr. Ḥassān b. Thābit said about that: He fled and threw his spear to us—perhaps, ʿIkrimah, you did not do it. And you turned running like the running of an ostrich, not deviating from the straight course. And you did not cast your back in comfort, as if the back of your neck were the neck of a hyena cub. And the polytheists returned fleeing, and al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām and ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb went out in their tracks and skirmished with them for a while. Al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām charged at Nawfal b. ʿAbd Allāh with the sword until he split him in two, and cut through the strap of his saddle until it reached the shoulder of the horse. So it was said: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, we have never seen a sword like yours. He said: By Allah, it is not the sword, but it is the forearm. Al-Zubayr also charged at Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb and struck the tail-strap of his horse, cutting it, and a coat of mail that the horse was carrying fell, and al-Zubayr took it. When they returned to Abū Sufyān, they said: This is a day in which we have gained nothing, so return. Al-Ḥākim said: I heard al-Aṣamm say: I heard al-ʿUṭāridī say: I heard al-Ḥāfiẓ Yaḥyā b. Ādam say: I compared the killing of ʿAmr by ʿAlī only to the saying of the Most High: "And they routed them by permission of Allah, and David killed Goliath" [al-Baqarah 251]. Ibn Isḥāq said, as narrated by al-Bayhaqī from him: The polytheists sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offering to buy the corpse of ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Wudd for ten thousand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "It is yours; we do not eat the price of the dead." Imām Aḥmad, al-Tirmidhī, and al-Bayhaqī narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Muslims killed a man from the polytheists on the day of the trench, and they sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Send us his body, and we will give you twelve thousand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no good in his corpse or in its price. Hand him over to them, for he is foul of corpse and foul of blood-money." So he did not accept anything from them. Abū Nuʿaym narrated: A man from the family of al-Mughīrah said: I will surely kill Muḥammad. So he made his horse leap into the trench, and it fell, and his neck broke. They said: O Muḥammad, hand him over to us so we may bury him, and we will pay you his blood-money. He said: "Take him, for he is foul of blood-money." Ibn ʿUqbah mentioned: When the polytheists sent asking for the body of Nawfal b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Makhzūmī when he was killed, and offered him the blood-money, he said: He is foul of blood-money, so may Allah curse him and curse his blood-money; we have no need of his blood-money, and we do not prevent you from burying him. Abū Jaʿfar b. Jarīr mentioned: When Nawfal got stuck in the trench, the people threw stones at him, and he kept saying: A killing better than this, O assembly of the Arabs. So ʿAlī went down to him and killed him, and the polytheists sought his remains, and he allowed them to take him. This is strange. Ibn Saʿd said: After that they had no fighting altogether until they departed, except that they did not cease sending out night patrols hoping for a raid.
