✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: The Muslims worked on it until they had completed it, and they chanted verses about a man among the Muslims called Juʿayl. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ named him ʿAmr. They said, among what they recited: He named him after Juʿayl, ʿAmrā; he was a back that day for the wretched one. And when they said “ʿAmrā,” the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said along with them: “ʿAmrā,” and when they said “Ẓahrā,” he said to them: “Ẓahrā.” Al-Bukhārī said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad narrated to us: Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAmr narrated to us: Abū Isḥāq narrated to us, from Ḥumayd: I heard Anas say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the trench, and the Emigrants and the Helpers were digging on a cold morning. They had no slaves to do that work for them, so when he saw the fatigue and hunger they were suffering, he said: “O Allah, the true life is the life of the Hereafter, so forgive the Helpers and the Emigrants.” They said in response: We are the ones who pledged allegiance to Muḥammad, to struggle as long as we live forever. In the two authentic collections, from the ḥadīth of Shuʿbah, from Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah, from Anas, there is something similar. Muslim also narrated it from the ḥadīth of Ḥammād b. Salamah, from Thābit and Ḥumayd, from Anas, in similar fashion. Al-Bukhārī said: Abū Maʿmar narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from Anas, who said: The Emigrants and the Helpers began digging the trench around Madinah and carrying the earth on their backs, and they were saying: We are the ones who pledged allegiance to Muḥammad, to struggle as long as we live forever. He said: The Prophet ﷺ was saying in response: “O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter, so bless the Helpers and the Emigrants.” He said: They were brought handfuls of barley, and it was prepared for them with rancid clarified butter, placed before the people. The people were hungry, and it was foul in the throat and had a stinking smell. Al-Bukhārī said: Qutaybah b. Saʿīd narrated to us: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Ḥāzim narrated to us, from Sahl b. Saʿd, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the trench, while they were digging and we were carrying earth on our shoulders. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O Allah, there is no life except the life of the Hereafter, so forgive the Emigrants and the Helpers.” Muslim narrated it from al-Qaʿnabī, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, likewise. Al-Bukhārī said: Muslim b. Ibrāhīm narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was carrying earth on the day of the trench until his belly was covered with dust—or his belly became dusty—saying: By Allah, had it not been for Allah, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So send down tranquility upon us, and make firm our feet if we meet the enemy. Indeed, those who have transgressed against us—if they desire tribulation, we refuse. And he raised his voice with it: “We refuse, we refuse.” Muslim narrated it from the ḥadīth of Shuʿbah likewise. Then al-Bukhārī said: Aḥmad b. ʿUthmān narrated to us: Shurayḥ b. Maslamah narrated to us: Ibrāhīm b. Yūsuf narrated to me: my father narrated to me, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, who was narrating and said: When it was the day of the Confederates and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was digging the trench, I saw him carrying earth from the trench until the dust concealed from me the skin of his belly. He had much body hair, and I heard him chanting the words of ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah while he was carrying earth, saying: O Allah, had it not been for You, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So send down tranquility upon us, and make firm our feet if we meet the enemy. Indeed, those who have transgressed against us—and if they desire tribulation, we refuse. Then he would prolong his voice at its end. Al-Bayhaqī said in al-Dalāʾil: ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbdān informed us: Aḥmad b. ʿUbayd al-Ṣaffār informed us: Ismāʿīl b. al-Faḍl al-Balkhī narrated to us: Ibrāhīm b. Yūsuf al-Balkhī narrated to us: al-Musayyib b. Sharīk narrated to us, from Ziyād b. Abī Ziyād, from Abū ʿUthmān, from Salmān, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck at the trench and said: In the name of Allah, and by Him we have been guided; if we worship other than Him, we will be wretched. What an excellent Lord, and beloved is the religion. This is a rare ḥadīth from this route. Al-Imām Aḥmad said: Sulaymān narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said while they were digging the trench: “O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter, so set aright the Helpers and the Emigrants.” They transmitted it in the two authentic collections from the ḥadīth of Ghundar, from Shuʿbah. Section: On the poetry said concerning the trench and Banū Qurayẓah Al-Bukhārī said: Ḥajjāj b. Minhāl narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us: ʿAdī b. Thābit narrated to us, that he heard al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib say: The Prophet ﷺ said to Ḥassān: “Satirize them—or lampoon them—for Gabriel is with you.” Al-Bukhārī said: Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān added, from al-Shaybānī, from ʿAdī b. Thābit, from al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib, who said: The Prophet ﷺ said on the day of Qurayẓah to Ḥassān b. Thābit: “Satirize the polytheists, for Gabriel is with you.” Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and al-Nasāʾī also narrated it through various routes from Shuʿbah without the addition mentioned by al-Bukhārī concerning the day of Banū Qurayẓah. Ibn Isḥāq, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb b. Mirdās, brother of Banū Muḥārib b. Fihr, said on the day of the trench—I say: and that was before his Islam—: And a fearful woman who thinks about us with misgivings, while we have led an enormous grinding mill, whose peak is like Mount Uḥud when its corners appear to the onlookers. You see the bodies in it clad in ample coats of mail over the heroes and the strong shields, and bare horses like arrows, marked, with which we aim at the misguided erring ones. It is as if they, when they attack and we attack, at the gate of the two trenches, are shaking hands with us— a people among whom we see no right-minded one, though they have said, “Are we not on the right path?” We confined them for a harsh month, and we were above them like subjugators, relieving one another and going out against them every day in full armor. In our hands are sharp swords with which we cut the crowns of heads and the sutures of the skull. It is as if their flashing, when they appear in the hands of our brandishers, is the flash of a vein of lightning that gleamed at night, in which you see the veins clearly visible. Were it not for a trench that they had beside them, we would have destroyed them all, but it stood between them and us, and they sought refuge in it from our fear. If we depart, we have left at your tents Saʿd as a hostage. When darkness falls, you hear our wailing over Saʿd, repeating the laments, and we shall visit you soon, as we visited you supporting one another, with a host from Kinānah, not weaponless, like the lions of the thicket when they defend the lair. He said: Kaʿb b. Mālik, brother of Banū Salamah, ؓ, answered him, saying: And a questioner asks about what we encountered; had she witnessed it, she would have seen us steadfast. We were patient, seeing no equal to Allah, trusting in Him for what befell us. The Prophet was for us a truthful minister, through whom we rise above all creation. We fight a people who wronged and disobeyed, and who had lain in wait for us with enmity. We engage them when they advance against us with a striking that hastens the hasty ones. You see us in wide trailing coats of mail, like pools of the open plain, clad in them, and in our right hands are white, light swords with which we cure the insolence of the troublesome ones, at the gate of the two trenches, like lions whose tangled thickets defend the den. Our horsemen, when they go out morning and evening against the enemies, are fierce and marked, to aid Aḥmad and Allah, until we become sincere servants of truth, and so that the people of Makkah may know, when they marched and the Confederates came in parties, that Allah has no partner, and that Allah is the protector of the believers. If you kill Saʿd in folly, indeed Allah is the best of those who have power. He will admit him into pleasant gardens that will be an abode for the righteous. Just as He turned you back in rout and flight with your rage, disgraced and disappointed— disgraced, you attained no good there, and you almost became utterly destroyed by a violent wind that blew upon you, and you were beneath it, overwhelmed. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā al-Sahmī said on the day of the trench—I say: and that was before he became Muslim—: Greet the abodes whose traces the length of decay and the alternation of ages have effaced, so it is as if the Jews had written their traces, except the sheltered spot and the place where the tent ropes were tied— a desolate place, as if you had never amused yourself there in comfort with sociable maidens of equal age. So leave the remembrance of past life and of a dwelling whose abode is worn-out and empty, and remember the trial of a people and thank them—they marched with all their forces from the idols, the idols of Makkah, heading for Yathrib in a dark, huge host, leaving the rugged grounds as known paths on every elevated rise and mountain pass. In it were swift horses, lean, led by the side, with taut bellies and close-set flanks, from every long-bodied mare and lean long-bodied stallion, like the wolf that hastens to surprise the flock. A host in which ʿUyaynah advanced with his banner, and in it Ṣakhr was the leader of the Confederates, two chiefs like the two full moons, in whom was the succor of the poor and the refuge of the fugitives, until when they reached Madinah and donned for death every tried and sharp sword, for a month and ten days, overpowering Muḥammad and his companions—in war, the best of companions. They called for their departure on the morning when you said, “We almost became among the disappointed.” Were it not for the trenches, they would have left of their host slain for hungry birds and wolves. He said: Ḥassān b. Thābit, ؓ, answered him, saying: Does the trace of an effaced abode, empty, speak to a questioner with an answer? A desolate place—the drizzles of the clouds have obliterated its traces, and the blowing of every water-bearing, rainy cloud. I once saw the dwellers there adorned by white-faced men of brilliant lineages. So leave the abodes and the mention of every shy maiden, white, sociable in speech, full-bosomed, and complain of your worries to God, and of what you see among a people who wronged the Messenger, angry. They marched with their host against him and incited the people of the villages and the bedouins of the valley— a host in which ʿUyaynah and Ibn Ḥarb were, raging in the company of the Confederates, until when they reached Madinah and hoped for the killing of the Messenger and the spoils, and they came against us in the morning with power in their hands, they were turned back in their rage upon their heels by a violent wind that scattered their host and by the armies of your Lord, the Lord of lords. God sufficed the believers against fighting them and rewarded them with the best of rewards, after they had despaired, and the sending down of victory from our King, the Bestower, scattered their host, and gladdened the eye of Muḥammad and his companions, and humiliated every denier and doubter, rebellious of heart, prone to suspicion, in unbelief, not pure of garments. Misery clung to his heart, so his heart remained in unbelief to the end of these ages. He said: Kaʿb b. Mālik, ؓ, also answered him, saying: The events of the wars left for us a remnant from the best gift of our Lord, the Bestower— white, lofty of peaks and watering places, with blackened trunks, abundant in milk, like the cow—its abundance and fullness are given generously to the neighbor, the cousin, and the night visitor, and selected camels like the herds of wild cattle, nurtured by fodder of barley and the cutting of green pasture, bare of flesh on their legs, their meat concentrated on bare backs and the rest of their limbs, led, returning at the call to battle when they go out, like the act of wild beasts returning to the hunter, and they guard the grazing livestock of the abode, and at times bring down the enemy and return with spoils, wild like wild beasts, swift in the fray, fierce in encounter, clearly of noble breed, fed in ease until they became huge, gorged with fat, light in their flanks, they go forth in doubled mail whose rings are tightly woven, and with solid spears, straight and Yathribite, and with swords whose scabbards the polishers have stripped, and with every noble, glorious man of honored lineage, who joins the right hand to a smooth, well-proportioned nose, whose blow is entrusted to a sharp sword, and a bright, blue-glinting spearhead in the shaft, as if it were the light of a shooting star in the darkness of night, and a squadron whose dust repels the enemy and turns back the edge of piercing arrows, assembled, gathered together, as if its spears in every gathering were the fire of a thicket. They take refuge in the shade of the banner, as if it were the shadow of an eagle on the straight spear of al-Khaṭṭī. It wearied Abū Karb and wearied Tubbaʿ, and its valor refused to submit to the bedouins. And exhortations from our Lord by which we are guided, spoken by a radiant, pure-garmented tongue. They were presented to us, and we desired their mention after they had been presented to the Confederates— wise sayings that the criminals, according to their claim, see as hardship, but those of understanding comprehend them. Sakhīnah came to contend with her Lord, but the one who contends with the Overcomer will be overcome. Ibn Hishām said: One whom I trust narrated to me: ʿAbd al-Malik b. Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him—Kaʿb—when he heard this verse from him: “Allah has thanked you, O Kaʿb, for this saying of yours.” I say: By Sakhīnah he means Quraysh. The Arabs used to call them that because of their frequent eating of hot food, which was generally not available to others among the people of the desert. And Allah knows best. Ibn Isḥāq said: Kaʿb b. Mālik also said: Whoever delights in striking that makes some of it clash with the rest like the crackling of burning reeds, let him come to a den of lions where swords are sharpened between al-Madhād and the side of the trench. They were trained in the striking of the marked ones and surrendered their souls to the Lord of the East, in a band through whom God aided His Prophet, and He was kind to His servant, in every ample coat of mail whose folds hang down like a pool whose rippling water is stirred by the wind, white and tightly woven, as if its rings were the eyes of locusts, firmly joined, polished, held in place by the sword-belt of an Indian blade, keen-edged and shining. Those, along with piety, will be our garments on the day of battle and at every moment of truth. We join our swords when they fall short with our step, advancing, and we make them reach when they do not reach. You see the skulls with their crowns exposed, let alone the hands, as if they had never been created. We meet the enemy with a massive, gathered squadron that repels the hosts like the splitting of the head of the east, and we prepare for the enemies every well-girt horse, rose-colored, with white-socked legs and piebald, that carries horsemen whose champions, in the fray, are lions of a moist morning, sincere, who exchange with the champions their deaths beneath the dust of battle with piercing spears. God commanded that they be tied for His enemy in war; indeed Allah is the best granter of success, so that they may be a rage for the enemy and a protection for the abode if the horses of the impetuous advance, and Allah the Mighty will aid us with strength from Him and with true patience at the moment we meet, and we obey the command of our Prophet and answer him; when he calls to a hardship, we are not outrun. Whenever a call to difficulties is made, we come to it, and whenever we see the battlefields, we hasten in them. Whoever follows the saying of the Prophet, he is among us one whose command is obeyed, truthful and confirmed. By that He will grant us victory and make our might appear, and He will give us a share in that attainment. Indeed, those who deny Muḥammad have disbelieved and strayed from the path of the God-fearing. Ibn Isḥāq said: Kaʿb b. Mālik also said: The Confederates knew, when they gathered against us and sought [to destroy] our religion, that we would not make peace. Bands from Qays b. ʿAylān assembled together, and Khindif, not knowing what would befall [them]. They drive us away from our religion, and we drive them away from unbelief; and the Merciful sees and hears. When they enraged us in a place, a wide victory from Allah helped us against their rage. And that is Allah's protection of us and His bounty upon us; and whoever Allah does not protect is lost. He guided us to the true religion and chose it for us; and to Allah belong the best of deeds above all doers. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are part of a long poem of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit said concerning the killing of Banū Qurayẓah: Qurayẓah met what distressed them, and they found no helper against humiliation. Calamity befell them, besides what had already befallen Banū al-Naḍīr. On the morning when the Messenger of Allah came to them descending swiftly, like the shining moon. He had horses drawn up in squadrons, charging with riders upon them like falcons. We left them having gained nothing; their blood upon them like saffron-dyed garments. They are slain, with birds circling over them; thus is repaid the obstinate, wicked one. So warn Quraysh, as sincere counsel, with the like of it from the Merciful, if they accept my warning. He said: And Ḥassān b. Thābit also said concerning Banū Qurayẓah: A company who aided Quraysh has perished, and they have no helper in their own land. They were given the Book but wasted it, and they are blind, ignorant of the Torah. You disbelieved in the Qurʾān, though you had been brought confirmation of what the warner said. Thus a spreading fire at al-Buwayrah was of little consequence to the nobles of Banū Luʾayy. Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib answered him, saying: May Allah perpetuate that deed and make the blaze burn in its quarters. You will know which of us is in a place of safety, and you will know which of our two lands suffers harm. Had the palm trees there been riding camels, they would have said: 'No staying place for you, so depart.' I say: Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith said this before he became Muslim, and some of these verses have been mentioned previously in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. Ibn Isḥāq mentioned Ḥassān's reply to that poem by Jabal b. Jawwāl al-Thaʿlabī, which we have intentionally omitted. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit also said, mourning Saʿd and a group of those who were martyred on the day of Banū Qurayẓah: Alas, O my people, is there any repeller of what has been decreed? And can what has passed of good life return? I remembered a bygone age, and the daughters of the heart [i.e., inner feelings] fell apart, and tears poured from me. A yearning of passionate love reminded me of brothers and slain ones among whom Ṭufayl and Rāfiʿ passed away. And Saʿd, so they have become inhabitants of the gardens, and their dwellings are desolate; the earth is empty of them. They fulfilled [their pledge] to the Messenger on the day of Badr, while above them were the shadows of death and the gleaming swords. He called and they answered him in truth, each of them obedient to him in every matter and attentive. They did not hold back until they all fell together; and nothing cuts off the appointed terms except the places of death. Because they hope for his intercession, when there will be no intercessor except the prophets. So that, O best of servants, is our trial: our answer to Allah while death is bitter. We have the first step to you, and behind us, our first ones are followers in the religion of Allah. And we know that sovereignty belongs to Allah alone, and that Allah's decree must inevitably come to pass.
