The Expedition of al-Khandaq (the Confederates)
ذِكْرُ عَرْضِهِ ﷺ الْغِلْمَانَ رَوَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ ؓ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَعْرِضُ الْغِلْمَانَ وَهُوَ يَحْفِرُ الْخَنْدَقَ، فَأَجَازَ مَنْ أَجَازَ وَرَدَّ مَنْ رَدَّ ، وَكَانَ الْغِلْمَانُ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَبْلُغُوا يَعْمَلُونَ مَعَهُ وَلَمْ يُجِزْهِمْ، وَلَكِنْ لَمَّا لَحَمَ الْأَمْرُ أَمَرَ مَنْ لَمْ يَبْلُغْ أَنْ يَرْجِعَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ إِلَى الْآطَامِ مَعَ الذَّرَارِيِّ وَالنِّسَاءِ. وَمِمَّنْ أَجَازَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: - عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، وَزَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ، وَالْبَرَاءُ بْنُ عَازِبٍ ، وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً.
Translation
✧ Mention of his ﷺ inspecting the boys Muḥammad b. ʿUmar related, from Abū Wāqid al-Laythī ؓ, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ inspecting the boys while he was digging the trench, and he passed those whom he passed and sent back those whom he sent back. The boys who had not reached puberty were working with him, but he did not pass them. However, when the matter became critical, he ordered those who had not reached puberty to return to their families in the strongholds along with the children and women. Among those whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed were: ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, Zayd b. Thābit, Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, and al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib, they being fifteen years old.
