The Expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'
Translation
✧ [Jābir and his story with his camel and the Messenger] Ibn Isḥāq said: Wahb b. Kaysān narrated to me, from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, who said: I set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the expedition of Dhāt al-Riqāʿ from Nakhl, on a weak camel of mine. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, he said: The traveling parties began to move on, and I began to lag behind, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with me. He said: What is wrong with you, O Jābir? He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, this camel of mine has slowed me down. He said: Make it kneel. He said: So I made it kneel, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made his mount kneel. Then he said: Give me that stick in your hand, or cut a stick for me from a tree. He said: So I did. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and prodded the camel with it several times. Then he said: Mount. So I mounted, and it went off—by the One who sent him with the truth—keeping pace with his she-camel in a vigorous trot. He said: And I talked with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said to me: Will you sell me this camel of yours, O Jābir? He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, rather I give it to you as a gift. He said: No, but sell it to me. He said: I said: Then name a price for it, O Messenger of Allah. He said: I have taken it for a dirham. He said: I said: No, then you would cheat me, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Then for two dirhams. He said: I said: No. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept raising the price for me until it reached the ūqiyyah. He said: I said: Are you satisfied, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Yes. I said: Then it is yours. He said: I have taken it. He said: Then he said: O Jābir, have you married yet? He said: I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: A previously married woman or a virgin? He said: I said: No, rather a previously married woman. He said: Why not a young girl so that you could play with her and she could play with you? He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, my father was struck down on the day of Uḥud and left seven daughters of his, so I married a woman who is a gatherer, who gathers their heads and takes care of them. He said: You have done well, if Allah wills. Indeed, when we reach Ṣirār, we will order a camel to be slaughtered, and we will stay by it that day of ours, and she will hear of us and shake out her cushions. He said: I said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, we have no cushions. He said: There will be. So when you arrive, do a wise deed. He said: When we came to Ṣirār, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered a camel to be slaughtered, and we stayed by it that day. When evening came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, and we entered. He said: I told the woman the conversation and what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me. She said: Then that is for you; hearing and obedience. He said: When morning came, I took hold of the camel's head and brought it until I made it kneel at the door of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Then I sat in the mosque near him. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and saw the camel. He said: What is this? They said: O Messenger of Allah, this is a camel brought by Jābir. He said: Where is Jābir? He said: So I was summoned to him. He said: He said: O son of my brother, take the head of your camel, for it is yours. Then he called Bilāl and said to him: Go with Jābir and give him an ūqiyyah. He said: So I went with him, and he gave me an ūqiyyah and added a little something to me. He said: By Allah, it kept increasing with me, and he saw its place in our house, until it was struck down yesterday among what was struck down for us—meaning the day of al-Ḥarrah. What the Prophet ﷺ told Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, that Allah revived his father and spoke to him Al-Suhaylī said: In this ḥadīth there is an allusion to what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had told Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, that Allah revived his father and spoke to him, and said to him: Wish upon Me. That is because he is a martyr, and Allah Almighty has said: Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth, and He added to that in His saying: For those who do good is the best and an increase. Then He combined for them the compensation and the compensated, and returned to them their spirits which He had purchased from them, for He said: And do not think those who have been killed in the way of Allah are dead; rather they are alive with their Lord, provided for. The spirit for a person is in the position of a mount, as ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said. He said: For that reason the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bought from Jābir his camel, which is his mount, gave him its price, then returned it to him, and increased him along with that. He said: In that is a confirmation of what he had told him about his father. This path that al-Suhaylī took here is a strange allusion and a marvelous imagination. And Allah, glorified and exalted, knows best. The Messenger of Allah's seeking forgiveness for Jābir's father And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought forgiveness for Abū Jābir’s father that night twenty-five times.
