The Expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'

Translation

✧ The Story of Ghawrath b. al-Ḥārith On the authority of Jābir, that he raided with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the raid of Najd. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, the midday rest overtook him in a valley full of thorny trees. The people dispersed seeking shade under the trees, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was under the shade of a tree, and he hung his sword on it. Jābir said: We slept a sleep, and then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called us, and we answered him, and there was a Bedouin sitting with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This one drew my sword while I was sleeping, and I woke up while it was in his hand drawn. He said: 'Who will protect you from me?' I said: 'Allah.' He said: 'Who will protect you from me?' I said: 'Allah.' So he sheathed the sword and sat down." And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not punish him, though he had done that. Muslim also narrated it, on the authority of Jābir, who said: We came with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we were at Dhāt al-Riqāʿ, and when we came upon a shady tree, we left it for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A man from the polytheists came while the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hanging on a tree. He took the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and drew it, and said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Do you fear me?" He said: "No." He said: "Who will protect you from me?" He said: "Allah protects me from you." He said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threatened him, so he sheathed the sword and hung it. And on the authority of Sulaymān b. Qays, from Jābir, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought Muḥārib Khaṣafah at Nakhl. They saw negligence from the Muslims, and a man from them named Ghawrath b. al-Ḥārith came until he stood over the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the sword, and said: "Who will protect you from me?" He said: "Allah." The sword fell from his hand, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the sword and said: "Who will protect you from me?" He said: "Be the best taker." He said: "Will you bear witness that there is no god but Allah?" He said: "No, but I pledge to you that I will not fight you, and I will not be with a people who fight you." So he let him go, and he went to his companions and said: "I have come to you from the best of people."
