The Expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'

Translation

✧ [ Ibn Yāsir and Ibn Bishr, and their standing guard over the Messenger's army, and what befell them ] Ibn Isḥāq said: My uncle Ṣadaqah b. Yasār narrated to me, from ʿAqīl b. Jābir, from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, who said: We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the expedition of Dhāt al-Riqāʿ from Nakhl, and a man struck the wife of a man from the polytheists. When the Messenger of God ﷺ turned back as a returner, her husband came, having been absent. When the news was told to him, he swore he would not stop until he shed blood among the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ. So he went out following the trail of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ halted at a campsite and said: "Who is a man who will guard us this night of ours?" He said: A man from the Muhājirūn and another man from the Anṣār volunteered, and they said: "We, O Messenger of God." He said: "Then be at the mouth of the mountain pass." He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions had halted at a mountain pass of the valley, and they were ʿAmmār b. Yāsir and ʿAbbād b. Bishr, according to what Ibn Hishām said. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the two men went out to the mouth of the mountain pass, the Anṣārī said to the Muhājirī: "Which part of the night do you like that I suffice you: its beginning or its end?" He said: "Rather suffice me its beginning." He said: The Muhājirī lay down and slept, and the Anṣārī stood praying. He said: The man came, and when he saw the figure of the man, he knew that he was the watchman of the people. He said: He shot an arrow and placed it in him. He said: He pulled it out and put it aside, and remained standing. He said: Then he shot him with another arrow and placed it in him. He said: He pulled it out and put it aside, and remained standing. Then he returned to him with the third, and placed it in him. He said: He pulled it out and put it aside, then he bowed and prostrated, then he roused his companion and said: "Sit, for I have been pinned." He said: He leapt up, and when the man saw the two of them, he knew that they had become aware of him, so he fled. He said: When the Muhājirī saw what was on the Anṣārī of blood, he said: "Glory be to God! Could you not have roused me the first time he shot you?" He said: "I was in a sūrah which I was reciting, and I did not like to cut it off until I completed it. When the shooting continued upon me, I bowed and then informed you. And by God, were it not that I would neglect a gap which the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded me to guard, my soul would have been cut off before I cut it off or completed it." It is said that the one shot was ʿAmmār. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: The more firmly established of them with us is ʿAbbād b. Bishr ؓ.
