The Expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ remained in Madinah after the expedition of Banū al-Naḍīr for the month of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir and part of Jumādā, then he raided Najd, intending Banū Muḥārib and Banū Thaʿlabah of Ghaṭafān. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ set out from Madinah on Saturday night, ten nights having passed of al-Muḥarram, with four hundred or seven hundred or eight hundred men. He took the route of al-Maḍīq, then came out to the valley of al-Shuqrah. He stayed there for a day and dispatched raiding parties. They returned from it at nightfall and informed him that they had seen no one, but they had come upon recent traces. The Messenger of God ﷺ then marched with his companions until he reached Nakhl, and came to their sitting places, but found no one in them except women. He seized them, and among them was a beautiful young girl. The bedouins had fled to the mountaintops, overlooking the Muslims. Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ met a gathering of Ghaṭafān, and the people drew near to one another, but there was no fighting between them. Both parties feared each other: the Muslims feared that the polytheists would raid them while they were heedless, and the polytheists feared that the Messenger of God ﷺ would not leave until he had exterminated them.
