The Expulsion of Banu al-Nadir in the Year Four
وَكَانَتْ قِصَّتُهُمْ فِي رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعٍ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ. وَحَكَى الْبُخَارِيُّ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: كَانَتْ بَنُو النَّضِيرِ بَعْدَ بَدْرٍ بِسِتَّةِ أَشْهُرٍ قَبْلَ أُحُدٍ. وَهَكَذَا رَوَى عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ فَذَكَرَ غَزْوَةَ بَدْرٍ فِي سَابِعَ عَشَرَ رَمَضَانَ سَنَةَ اثْنَتَيْنِ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ غَزَا بَنِي النَّضِيرِ ثُمَّ غَزَا أُحُدًا فِي شَوَّالٍ سَنَةَ ثَلَاثٍ، ثُمَّ قَاتَلَ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ فِي شَوَّالٍ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعٍ. وَقَالَ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ: وَقَدْ كَانَ الزُّهْرِيُّ يَقُولُ هِيَ قَبْلَ أُحُدٍ. قَالَ: وَذَهَبَ آخَرُونَ إِلَى أَنَّهَا بَعْدَهَا، وَبَعْدَ بِئْرِ مَعُونَةَ أَيْضًا. قَالَ فِي الْهَدْيِ: زَعَمَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ شِهَابٍ الزُّهْرِيُّ أَنَّ غَزْوَةَ بَنِي النَّضِيرِ كَانَتْ بَعْدَ بَدْرٍ بِسِتَّةِ أَشْهُرٍ ، وَهَذَا وَهْمٌ مِنْهُ وَغَلَطٌ، بَلِ الَّذِي لَا شَكَّ فِيهِ أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ بَعْدَ أُحُدٍ، انْتَهَى.
Translation
✧ Their story took place in Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year four of the Hijrah. Al-Bukhārī related, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, that he said: Banū al-Naḍīr were six months after Badr, before Uḥud. Likewise he narrated from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, and he mentioned the expedition of Badr on the seventeenth of Ramaḍān in the year two, saying: Then he raided Banū al-Naḍīr, then he raided Uḥud in Shawwāl in the year three, then he fought on the day of the Trench in Shawwāl in the year four. Al-Bayhaqī said: Al-Zuhrī used to say it was before Uḥud. He said: Others held that it was after it, and after Biʾr Maʿūnah as well. He said in al-Hady: Muḥammad b. Shihāb al-Zuhrī claimed that the expedition of Banū al-Naḍīr was six months after Badr, and this is a delusion on his part and an error. Rather, what is beyond doubt is that it was after Uḥud, end of quote.
