The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ [A rajz poem attributed to ʿAlī on the Day of Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib said—Ibn Hishām said: A man among the Muslims other than ʿAlī said it on the Day of Uḥud, according to what one of the people of knowledge in poetry mentioned to me, and I did not see any of them know it to be by ʿAlī: O God, indeed al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah was faithful and with us had a covenant. He came forward in a perplexing desert, like a dark, gloomy night, amid many swords and spears, seeking the Messenger of God in what was there. Ibn Hishām said: His saying “like a night” [kalaylatin] is on the authority of other than Ibn Isḥāq.
