Translation
✧ The Poetry of Nuʿam in Lamenting Shammās Ibn Isḥāq said: Nuʿam, the wife of Shammās b. ʿUthmān, said, lamenting Shammās—and he was struck down on the day of Uḥud: O eye, be generous with copious tears, not sparingly, for a noble one among the youths, a lion-like hero, Quick in sudden encounter, blessed in his nature, bearer of standards, rider of horses. I said, when the announcer of his death came to me, in grief: The gallant has perished, and the feeder and clothier has perished. And I said, when his assemblies became empty of him: May God not make distant from us the nearness of Shammās. The Poetry of Abū al-Ḥakam in Consoling Nuʿam Her brother, Abū al-Ḥakam b. Saʿīd b. Yarbūʿ, answered her, consoling her, saying: Keep your modesty in veiling and in dignity, for Shammās was but one among mankind. Do not kill yourself when his appointed time came, in obedience to God on the day of terror and hardship. Ḥamzah was the lion of God, so be patient, for he tasted on that day from the cup of Shammās.
