Translation

✧ [ Ṣafiyyah’s Poetry in Mourning Ḥamzah ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ṣafiyyah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, mourning her brother Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: She asks the companions of Uḥud, out of fear, the daughters of my father, from one of non-Arab speech and from a well-informed one. The well-informed one said that Ḥamzah has indeed lain down, the wazīr of the Messenger of Allah, the best of wazīrs. The God of Truth, Owner of the Throne, summoned him with a call to a garden wherein he lives with delight and joy. That is what we used to hope for and expect for Ḥamzah on the Day of Gathering, the best of final ends. By Allah, I shall not forget you as long as the east wind blows, with weeping and grief in my presence and my journeying, for the lion of Allah who was a defender of it, warding off from Islam every ungrateful one. Would that my corpse were there then, and my bones before hyenas that frequent me and vultures. I say, when the obituary has raised my kinsfolk, may Allah reward with good a brother and a helper. Ibn Hishām said: One of the scholars of poetry recited to me her saying: with weeping and grief in my presence and my journeying.
