Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ibn Rawāḥah in mourning Ḥamzah] Ibn Isḥāq said: And ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said, mourning Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited it to me, attributing it to Kaʿb b. Mālik: My eye wept, and it had a right to weep; but weeping and wailing do not avail For the lion of God on the morning when they said: Is Ḥamzah that slain man? The Muslims were all stricken by his loss there, and by it the Messenger was stricken. Abū Yaʿlā, for you the pillars were shattered, for you were the glorious, the dutiful, the maintainer of ties. Upon you be the peace of your Lord in gardens, mingled with bliss that never ceases. O Hāshim, best of men, be patient; all your deeds are good and beautiful. The Messenger of God is steadfast, noble, speaking by God's command when he says: Is there one to convey from me to Luʾayy: after today a turn of fortune shall turn? Before today they did not know nor taste our battles, by which the burning thirst is quenched. You forgot our striking at the well of Badr on the morning when swift death came to you, The morning when Abū Jahl lay prostrate, with birds hovering and circling above him, And ʿUtbah and his son fell together, and Shaybah was bitten by the burnished sword, And we left Umayyah stretched out, with a pliant, noble spear in his chest, And the skulls of Banū Rabīʿah—ask about them; in our swords are notches from them. O Hind, weep and do not tire, for you are the bereft, tearful, child-bereft one. O Hind, do not show gloating over Ḥamzah; indeed your might is abased.
