Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ḥassān on the bearers of the standard] Ḥassān b. Thābit said, mentioning the number of the bearers of the standard on the day of Uḥud — Ibn Hishām said: This is the finest that has been said: Sleep with the evening is forbidden by griefs, and a phantom when the stars set; From a beloved who has lodged in your heart from him a sickness, so it is entering and concealed; O my people, can one like me be slain by a man feeble of grip and of bones, weary; If the yearling of the offspring of the ant were to creep upon her, the wounds would make her cry out; Her concern is perfume and the bed, and she is covered with silver and arranged pearls; The sun of day has not surpassed her in anything save that youth does not last; My maternal uncle is the orator of Jābiyat al-Jawlān with al-Nuʿmān when he stands; And I am the falcon at the gate of Ibn Salmā on the day of Nuʿmān, in shackles, sick; And Ubayy and Wāqid were released for me on the day they departed, their fetter muzzled; And I pledged the two hands for them all together, every palm being a portion divided for them; My lineage has taken the forelocks from among them, every abode in which I have a great father; And Ubayy is in Sumayḥa of the decisive speaker on the day when the adversaries met against him; Those are our deeds, and the deed of al-Zibaʿrā is obscure among his friend, blameworthy; Many a forbearance is wasted by lack of wealth, and ignorance is covered over by comfort; Do not revile me, for you are not one to revile me; indeed my reviler among men is the noble one; I care not whether a he-goat bleats in rough ground or a vile man slanders me behind my back; And to me belongs the courage from you when you departed: family of pure stock from Banū Quṣayy; Nine who carried the standard, and it flew amid the rabble of the spears, pierced; And they remained until they were all given over in a station, and all of them blamed; With dark-red blood; and it was protection that they remain — indeed the noble is noble; And they remained until they were made to visit Shuʿūb, and the spears were shattered in their throats; And Quraysh fled from us, slipping away, so that they would not remain, and the forbearances became light among them; The young women among them could not bear its burden; indeed it is the stars that carry the standard. Ibn Hishām said: Ḥassān recited this ode: Sleep with the evening is forbidden by griefs at night, so he called his people and said to them: I feared that my term would overtake me before morning, so that you would not relate it from me.
