Translation

✧ [Ḥassān’s poetry in mourning Ḥamzah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit also said, mourning Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib: Do you recognize the abode whose trace has been effaced after you by the pouring of the drenching, heavy rain Between al-Sarādīḥ and Udmanah, then the course of al-Rawḥāʾ in Ḥāʾil? I asked it about that, but it was dumb, not knowing what answer to give the questioner. Leave aside an abode whose trace has been effaced, and weep for Ḥamzah, the possessor of bounty, The one who filled the shīzā when a dark dust-storm blew in a barren, cold land, The one who left his adversary at a lion’s thicket, stumbling in the dry, sharp spear-thrust, The one who wore the horses when they recoiled, like a fierce lion in his thicket, White-skinned, of the summit of Hāshim, who never mingled truth with falsehood, He fell as a martyr amid your swords— may the hands of Waḥshī, the killer, be paralyzed! What a man he left on a spear-head, well-straightened, of the smooth-working smith! The earth darkened at his loss, and the light of the waning moon turned black. May Allah bless him in a garden, lofty, honored in its entrance. We used to regard Ḥamzah as a refuge for us in every affair that befell us, a protector. And in Islam he was a defender, sufficient for you against the loss of the one who sits back and fails. Do not rejoice, O Hind, but let flow tears and shed the weeping of the bereaved. And weep for ʿUtbah when he was cut down by the sword beneath the swirling dust, When he fell among elders of yours, from every arrogant one, whose strength I subdued, an ignorant one. Ḥamzah destroyed them among a band walking beneath the fine coats of mail, On the day when Jibrīl was his minister— how excellent a minister of the mounted, bearing warrior!
