The Expedition of Uḥud

Translation
✧ [Poetry by Ibn al-Zibaʿrā] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā said on the day of Uḥud: O raven of separation, you have made hear, so say: You only utter something that has already been done. For good and for evil there is a term, and each of these has a direction and an approach. And gifts are mean among them, and equal is the grave of the rich and the poor. Every life and comfort is fleeting, and the daughters of time play with everyone. Convey to Ḥassān from me a sign, for the composition of poetry heals the one with burning thirst. How many do you see in the neighborhood of skulls and hands that have been cut off and feet, and fine coats of mail that were stripped from champions who were destroyed at the halting place? How many noble lords have we killed, of glorious lineage on both sides, bold heroes, truthful in courage, excellent chiefs, unflinching at the thrust of spears? Ask al-Mihrās who dwells in it, among skulls and heads like partridges. Would that my elders at Badr had witnessed the anxiety of the Khazraj at the thrust of spears, when she rubbed her chest at Qubāʾ and slaughter raged among ʿAbd al-Ashhal. Then they went off from that dancing, like the dance of young ostriches climbing the mountain. We killed twice as many of their nobles, and we evened the imbalance of Badr, so it became balanced. I do not blame the soul except that we, had we turned back, we would have done the extraordinary with Indian swords rising over their heads, thirsty after drinking. [Ḥassān's reply to Ibn al-Zibaʿrā] Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī ؓ answered him, saying: You have gone, O Ibn al-Zibaʿrā, from a battle in which the excellence was ours, if one judged rightly. You attained something and we attained something from you; and thus war is sometimes turns of fortune. We place the swords on your shoulders wherever we wish, thirst after drinking. We bring out the humors from your buttocks like the dung of she-camels eating ʿasal. When you turn on your heels fleeing in the mountain pass like herds of sheep, when we made a true charge and forced you to the foot of the mountain with squadrons like the edges of the desert; whoever among the people meets them perishes. The pass was too narrow for us when we cut through it, and we filled the gap from it and the slope with men whose like you are not; they were aided by Gabriel as a help, so he descended. And we prevailed on the day of Badr through piety, obedience to God, and belief in the messengers. We killed every head among them, and we killed every stout chieftain. And we left among Quraysh a disgrace on the day of Badr and proverbial tales. And the Messenger of God ﷺ truly witnessed the day of Badr, along with the foolish weaklings, among Quraysh of crowds gathered together like what is gathered in fertile land of neglected camels. We, not the likes of you, O son of a whore, attend the people when hardship descends. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me: "and proverbial tales" and the verse before it. And his saying: "among Quraysh of crowds gathered together" is from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Among what al-Umawī mentioned for Ḥassān b. Thābit that he said in the expedition of Uḥud—and God knows best—: They obeyed Satan when he disgraced them, and disgrace and failure became evident among them, when they shouted a single shout with Abū Sufyān, saying: "Exalted be Hubal!" So we all answered them together: "Our Lord, the Merciful, is higher and greater. Be steadfast; we will give you to drink a bitter draught from the pools of death, and death is a first drink. And know that when the pot boils over the cords of death, it blazes." And it is as if these verses are a piece of his answer to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā. And God knows best. [Poetry of Ibn al-Zibaʿrā on the day of Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā said on the day of Uḥud, weeping for the slain: Indeed tears flowed from your two eyes, and the rope of youth has been cut. The abode of the one you love has become distant, and the separation of the tribe has parted a home with the beloved, so it is hungry. There is no return for what has passed for one with burning grief, even if the shedding of tears lasts long. Leave that, but has Umm Mālik received the tales of my people, while the talk spreads? And our horses led to the people of Yathrib, swift steeds, some homebred and some brought from afar, on the evening we journeyed in a throng led by one who harms enemies and benefits the friend. We fastened on ourselves every coat of mail as if it were a pool in the bend of the two valleys, a deep pool. When they saw us, awe mingled with them, and a terrible matter confronted them there. They wished that the earth would split its surface with them, and the steadfast man of the people there is impatient. And white swords were bared whose flash was like a fire quickly climbing the hillocks. With our right hands we raise them over every head, and among them are deadly poisons for the enemy, swift to kill. They left the slain of the Aws with the earth seizing them, hyenas and birds waiting for those who fall. And the assembled Banū al-Najjār in every watercourse, with their bodies covered by flowing blood from their blows. Had it not been for the height of the mountain pass, they would have left Aḥmad dead, but he climbed while the spears were drawn. As they left Ḥamza lying in the attack, and in his chest the sharp spearhead was thrust. They left him under his banner; upon his flesh birds await the falling. At Uḥud the spears of the champions sought them, as the drawing up of the ropes of buckets overtakes them. [Poetry of Ḥassān in reply to Ibn al-Zibaʿrā] Ḥassān b. Thābit answered him, saying: Have the ruins of Umm al-Walīd stirred your longing, empty ruins with none of their people together? The summer winds and a pouring, thundering raincloud from the bucket have effaced them. Nothing remains but the fireplace, around which are crouching like doves. So leave mention of a dwelling that separation among its people has scattered, a cutting severance for the strong ropes. And say: If a fool counts a day at Uḥud, the truth will surely spread. The Banū al-Aws all endured patiently in it, and they had a lofty remembrance there. The Banū al-Najjār protected in it and endured, and none of them was impatient in the encounter, before the Messenger of God ﷺ; they do not forsake him. They have a helper from their Lord and an intercessor. They were faithful when you disbelieved, O contemptible ones, in your Lord; and a faithful servant and a negligent one are not equal. In their hands are white swords; when war blazes, one struck by them must fall. As they left ʿUtba lying in the dust, and Saʿd cast down, while the spears were drawn. And they left under the dust, leaning, a noble man, while blood wetted the shirt. The Messenger of God ﷺ wards off where the dust raised by them settles upon the people. Those are a people, lords from your branches; and in every people there are lords and branches. With them we honor God until He honors us, even if a matter, O contemptible ones, is terrible. So do not mention the slain while Ḥamza is among them, a slain man lying for God, and he is obedient. The gardens of eternity are an abode for him, and the command of the One who decrees affairs is swift. And your slain are in the Fire; the best of their provision is boiling water with it, and in its interior is ḍarīʿ. And ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā said on the day of Uḥud: We killed Ibn Jaḥsh, and we rejoiced at his killing, and Ḥamza among his horsemen, and Ibn Qawqal. Men escaped from them, so they hurried; would that they had returned and we had not hastened. They stood for us until our swords bit their backs, and all of us were not unarmed, and until killing should be among us and among them, and they should meet a morning draught whose evil is not dispelled. Ibn Hishām said: His saying "and all of us" and his saying "and they should meet a morning draught" are from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
