The Expedition of Uḥud
Translation
✧ On the authority of Abū Hurayrah, that he used to say: "Tell me about a man who entered Paradise without ever having prayed." When the people did not recognize him, they asked him: "Who is he?" So he would say: "Uṣayrim of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, ʿAmr b. Thābit b. Waqsh." Al-Ḥuṣayn said: I said to Maḥmūd b. Labīd: "How was the affair of al-Uṣayrim?" He said: "He used to refuse Islam against his people. When the day of Uḥud came, it occurred to him, and he embraced Islam. Then he took his sword and went forth until he entered among the mass of the people. He fought until wounds disabled him." He said: "While some men of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal were seeking their slain on the battlefield, they came upon him. They said: 'By Allah, this is indeed al-Uṣayrim! What brought him? We had left him while he was a denier of this discourse!' They asked him: 'What brought you, O ʿAmr—zeal for your people, or desire for Islam?' He said: 'Rather, desire for Islam. I believed in Allah and His Messenger and embraced Islam. Then I took my sword and went forth with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and fought until what befell me befell me.' He did not remain long before he died in their arms. They mentioned him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'Indeed, he is among the people of Paradise.'"
