The Expedition of Uḥud
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: اشْتَدَّ غَضَبُ اللَّهِ عَلَى قَوْمٍ فَعَلُوًا بِنَبِيِّهِ - ✧ Mention of the steadfastness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Al-Bayhaqī narrated from al-Miqdād b. ʿAmr ؓ a ḥadīth about the day of Uḥud, and he said: By Allah, they inflicted a swift and heavy slaughter, and they caused the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what they caused. Verily, by the One who sent him with the truth, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not move a single span, and he was in the face of the enemy, while a party of his companions would return to him at one time and disperse from him at another. Sometimes I saw him standing, shooting with his bow and throwing stones until they withdrew, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained firm with a band that remained firm with him. [What the Messenger encountered on the day of Uḥud] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Muslims were routed, and the enemy inflicted losses among them. It was a day of trial and testing, in which Allah honored those He honored from the Muslims with martyrdom, until the enemy reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He was pelted with stones until he fell on his side, and his incisor was broken, his face was wounded, and his lip was cut. The one who inflicted that upon him was ʿUtbah b. Abī Waqqāṣ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl narrated to me, from Anas b. Mālik, who said: The Prophet's ﷺ incisor was broken on the day of Uḥud, and his face was wounded. The blood began to flow over his face, and he began wiping the blood while saying: 'How can a people succeed who have stained the face of their Prophet while he calls them to their Lord?' Then Allah, mighty and majestic, revealed concerning that: 'You have no part in the matter, whether He turns to them in mercy or punishes them, for they are indeed wrongdoers.' Ibn Hishām said: Rubayḥ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Saʿīd al-Khudrī mentioned from his father, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī: that ʿUtbah b. Abī Waqqāṣ shot the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on that day and broke his lower right incisor and wounded his lower lip; that ʿAbd Allāh b. Shihāb al-Zuhrī wounded him on his forehead; and that Ibn Qamiʾah wounded his cheek, and two rings of the helmet entered his cheek. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell into one of the pits that Abū ʿĀmir had dug for the Muslims to fall into without their knowledge. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib took the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh lifted him until he stood upright. Mālik b. Sinān, Abū Abī Saʿīd al-Khudrī, sucked the blood from the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then swallowed it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever has touched my blood with his blood, the Fire will not touch him.' Ibn Hishām said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Muḥammad al-Darāwardī mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever wishes to look at a martyr walking on the face of the earth, let him look at Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh.' From the Mother of the Believers ʿĀʾishah, who said: When the day of Uḥud was mentioned, Abū Bakr would weep and then say: 'That was a day entirely for Ṭalḥah.' Then he began to narrate. He said: I was the first to return on the day of Uḥud, and I saw a man fighting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, defending him. He said: I said: 'Be Ṭalḥah, for what has passed me by has passed me by.' I said: 'He is a man from my people, more beloved to me than a man between me and the east whom I do not know, while I am closer to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than him, and he walks swiftly as if snatching, but I do not snatch.' Then he was Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ. We reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his incisor had been broken, his face was wounded, and two rings of the helmet had entered his cheeks. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Take care of your companion,' meaning Ṭalḥah, who had lost much blood. We paid no heed to his words. He said: I went to remove that ring from his face, but Abū ʿUbaydah said: 'I adjure you by my right to leave me.' So I left him. He disliked touching it with his hand lest he hurt the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he bit down on them with his mouth and extracted one of the two rings, and his own front tooth fell out with the ring. I went to do what he had done, but he said: 'I adjure you by my right to leave me.' He said: He did the same as the first time, and his other front tooth fell out with the ring. Thus Abū ʿUbaydah ؓ became one of the most gap-toothed of people. We attended to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then we went to Ṭalḥah in one of those pits, and there he was with seventy-some wounds, between spear thrusts, arrow shots, and sword strikes, and his finger had been cut off. We attended to him. From Abū Ḥāzim, that he heard Sahl b. Saʿd being asked about the wound of the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: By Allah, I know who used to wash the wound of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who used to pour the water, and with what it was treated. He said: Fāṭimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, used to wash it, and ʿAlī poured water with the shield. When Fāṭimah saw that the water only increased the blood, she took a piece of a mat, burned it, and applied it, and the blood stopped. His incisor was broken on that day, his face was wounded, and the helmet was broken on his head. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah's wrath is severe upon a people who did this to their Prophet' – pointing to his incisor – 'Allah's wrath is severe upon a man whom the Messenger of Allah kills in the cause of Allah.' His companions dispersed from the Prophet ﷺ, and some of them entered Madinah, while a party went up the mountain to the rock. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began calling the people: 'To me, servants of Allah, to me, servants of Allah.' Thirty men gathered to him, and they began walking before him. No one stood firm except Ṭalḥah and Sahl b. Ḥunayf. Ṭalḥah protected him and was shot in the hand with an arrow, and his hand withered. The news spread among the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been killed. Some of the companions of the rock said: 'If only we had a messenger to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy, who might obtain for us a guarantee of safety from Abū Sufyān. O people, Muḥammad has been killed, so return to your people before they come to you and kill you.' [The first to recognize the Messenger after the defeat] Ibn Isḥāq said: The first to recognize the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after the defeat and the people's saying 'the Messenger of Allah has been killed' was, as Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī mentioned to me, Kaʿb b. Mālik. He said: I recognized his eyes shining from beneath the helmet, and I cried out at the top of my voice: 'O company of Muslims, rejoice! This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to me to be silent. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Muslims recognized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they rose with him and he moved with them toward the mountain pass, accompanied by Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām, ؓ, al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah, and a group of Muslims. Abū Yaʿlā narrated with a sound chain from ʿAlī ؓ that he said: When the people dispersed from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Uḥud, I looked among the slain but did not see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: By Allah, he would not flee, and I do not see him among the slain. But I think Allah, exalted, was angry with us for what we did, and He raised His Prophet ﷺ. There is nothing better for me than to fight until I am killed. So I broke the sheath of my sword, then charged at the people, and they opened a way for me, and there I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among them, fighting them ﷺ. Ibn al-Mundhir narrated from Kulayb b. Shihāb, who said: ʿUmar addressed us and used to recite Āl ʿImrān on the pulpit and say: 'It is Uḥudī.' When he reached the words of the Most High: 'Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met' [Āl ʿImrān:155], he said: On the day of Uḥud we were defeated, and I fled until I climbed the mountain. I saw myself leaping like a mountain goat. Then I heard a Jew saying: 'Muḥammad has been killed.' I said: 'I will not hear anyone say Muḥammad has been killed except that I will strike his neck.' Then I looked and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the people returning to him. Ibn Isḥāq said: The first of the Muslims to turn back after the flight was Qays b. Muḥarrith, and it is said Qays b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAdī b. Jusham, with a party of the Anṣār. They encountered the polytheists and entered their thick of battle, and not one man escaped from them until he was killed. Qays fought them until he killed a number of them, and they did not kill him except with spears, threading him through. Fourteen spear thrusts were found on him, which had pierced him through, and ten sword strikes on his body. Al-Ḥubāb b. al-Mundhir called out: 'O Banū Salamah!' They came to him with a single swift gait, saying: 'At your service, caller of Allah.' ʿAbbās b. ʿUbādah b. Naḍlah – with nūn and dotted ḍād – Khārijah b. Zayd, and Aws b. Arqam raised their voices. ʿAbbās said: 'O company of Muslims: Allah and your Prophet! This has befallen you because of disobedience to your Prophet, who promised you victory as long as you were patient.' Then he removed his helmet and took off his armor, and said to Khārijah b. Zayd: 'Do you want it?' He said: 'No, I want what you want.' They all plunged among the enemy, while ʿAbbās said: 'What excuse do we have before our Lord if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is struck while a single eye of ours blinks?' Khārijah said: 'We have no excuse before our Lord and no argument.' Sufyān b. ʿAbd Shams killed ʿAbbās, and Khārijah b. Zayd was struck by spears and wounded with some ten wounds, and Ṣafwān b. Umayyah finished him off – and Ṣafwān later embraced Islam – and Aws b. Arqam ؓ was killed. [Ḥassān's poetry about ʿUtbah and what he did to the Messenger] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit said about ʿUtbah b. Abī Waqqāṣ: When Allah requites a people for their deeds and the Most Merciful, Lord of the easts, harms them, then may my Lord disgrace you, O ʿUtayb b. Mālik, and confront you before death with one of the thunderbolts. You stretched out a right hand deliberately against the Prophet, so you made his mouth bleed; may it be cut off by the flashing swords. Would that you had remembered Allah and the abode to which you will return at one of the calamities. Ibn Hishām said: We have omitted two verses from it in which he used vulgar language.
