The Expedition of al-Sawīq
وَنَذِرَ بِهِمُ النَّاسُ، فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي طَلَبِهِمْ يَوْمَ الْأَحَدِ الْخَامِسِ مِنْ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ اثْنَيْنِ وَعِشْرِينَ شَهْرًا. فِي مِائَتَيْنِ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ. وَفِي الْإِشَارَةِ ثَمَانِينَ، وَجُمِعَ بِأَنَّ الرُّكْبَانَ ثَمَانُونَ وَعَامَّةَ الْجَيْشِ مِائَتَانِ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ بَشِيرَ - وَهُوَ بِفَتْحِ الْمُوَحَّدَةِ - ابْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُنْذِرِ حَتَّى بَلَغَ قَرْقَرَةَ الْكُدْرِ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ رَاجِعًا، وَقَدْ فَاتَهُ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ وَأَصْحَابُهُ، وَقَدْ رَأَوْا أَزْوَادًا مِنْ أَزْوَادِ الْقَوْمِ قَدْ طَرَحُوهَا فِي الْحَرْثِ يَتَخَفَّفُونَ مِنْهَا لِلنَّجَاءِ، فَقَالَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ، حَيْنَ رَجَعَ بِهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَتَطْمَعُ لَنَا أَنْ تَكُونَ غَزْوَةً ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ.
Translation
✧ And the people were warned of them, so the Messenger of God ﷺ went out in pursuit of them on Sunday, the fifth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, at the beginning of twenty-two months. With two hundred of the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār. And in the indication, eighty, and it was combined that the riders were eighty and the general army two hundred. He appointed over Madinah Bashīr—and it is with a fatḥah on the bāʾ—b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir, until he reached Qarqarat al-Kudr, then he returned back. Abū Sufyān and his companions had eluded him, and they had seen some of the provisions of the people which they had thrown into the cultivated land, lightening themselves of them for escape. So the Muslims said, when the Messenger of God ﷺ returned with them: "O Messenger of God, do you hope for us that it will be a military expedition?" He said: "Yes."
