Translation
✧ Thus the total number of Muslims who witnessed Badr was three hundred and fourteen men, including the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as al-Bukhārī said: ʿAmr b. Khālid narrated to us, Zuḥayr narrated to us, Abū Isḥāq narrated to us: I heard al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀzib say: The companions of Muḥammad ﷺ, may He be pleased with them, who witnessed Badr told me that they were the number of the companions of Ṭālūt who crossed the river with him, three hundred and some ten. Al-Barāʾ said: No, by Allah, none crossed the river with him except a believer. Ibn Jarīr said: This is the saying of the generality of the Salaf, that they were three hundred and some ten men. Al-Bukhārī also said: Maḥmūd narrated to us, Wahb narrated to us, from Shuʿbah, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ, who said: I and Ibn ʿUmar were deemed too young on the day of Badr. The Muhājirūn on the day of Badr were a little over sixty, and the Anṣār were two hundred and forty-some. Thus it occurs in this narration. Ibn Jarīr said: Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd al-Muḥāribī narrated to me, Abū Mālik al-Janbī narrated to us, from al-Ḥajjāj – and he is Ibn Arṭāh – from al-Ḥakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Muhājirūn on the day of Badr were seventy men, and the Anṣār were two hundred and thirty-six men. The bearer of the banner of the Prophet ﷺ was ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and the bearer of the banner of the Anṣār was Saʿd b. ʿUbādah. This implies that they were three hundred and six men. Ibn Jarīr said: It was also said: They were three hundred and seven men. I say: This may have been counting the Prophet ﷺ among them, while the first counted them without him. And Allah knows best. In the “Ṣaḥīḥ” from Anas, it was said to him: Did you witness Badr? He said: And where would I be absent? In the Sunan of Abū Dāwūd, from Saʿīd b. Manṣūr, from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān Ṭalḥah b. Nāfiʿ, from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām, that he said: I was drawing water for my companions on the day of Badr. These two were not mentioned by al-Bukhārī nor by al-Ḍiyāʾ. And Allah knows best. I say: Among those whom Ibn Isḥāq counted among the people of Badr are those for whom a share was allotted in its spoils though he did not attend it, having stayed behind for an excuse for which permission to stay behind was granted to him. They were eight or nine: ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān stayed behind to nurse Ruqayyah bt. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until she died, so a share and reward were allotted to him. Saʿīd b. Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl was in Syria, so a share and reward were allotted to him. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh was also in Syria, so a share and reward were allotted to him. Abū Lubābah Bashīr b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir was sent back by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from al-Rawḥāʾ when news of the Quraysh expedition’s departure from Makkah reached him, so he appointed him over Madinah and allotted him a share and reward. Al-Ḥārith b. Ḥāṭib b. ʿUbayd b. Umayyah was also sent back by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the road, and a share and reward were allotted to him. Al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah was broken at al-Rawḥāʾ, so he returned, and a share was allotted to him – al-Wāqidī added: and reward. Khawwāt b. Jubayr did not attend the battle and a share and reward were allotted to him. Abū al-Ḍayyāḥ b. Thābit went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and a young camel of Ḥajar struck his shin, so he returned, and a share and reward were allotted to him. Al-Wāqidī said: Saʿd b. Mālik prepared to go out but died, and it was said that he died at al-Rawḥāʾ, so a share and reward were allotted to him.
