The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ The lamentation of the people of Makkah over their slain, then their prevention from that Ibn Isḥāq related, from ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, who said: Quraysh lamented over their slain in Makkah—Ibn ʿUqbah and the author of al-Imtāʿ added: for a month—and the women cut their hair. A man's riding camel or his horse would be brought and stood among the women, and they would screen it with curtains around it [and lament around it] and go out into the alleys. End. Then they said: Do not do that, lest it reach Muḥammad and his companions and they gloat over you; and do not send [anything] for your captives until you seek to learn their condition, lest Muḥammad and his companions gain advantage over you in the ransom. Al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib had had three of his sons struck down: Zamʿah b. al-Aswad, ʿAqīl b. al-Aswad, and al-Ḥārith b. Zamʿah. He wished to weep over his sons. While he was in that state, he heard a wailing woman at night. He said to a slave of his—his sight had gone—: "Look, has anyone lamented? Has Quraysh wept over their slain? Perhaps I may weep over Abū Ḥukaymah"—with ḍammah on the unpointed ḥāʾ and fatḥah on the kāf—meaning Zamʿah, "for my chest is burning." When the slave returned to him, he said: "It is only a woman weeping over a camel of hers that she has lost." ʿAbbād said: That is when al-Aswad says: She weeps that a camel of hers has gone astray, And sleeplessness prevents her from sleep. So do not weep over a young camel, but rather Over Badr, where the fortunes fell short. Over Badr, the nobles of Banū Huṣayṣ, And Makhzūm, and the clan of Abū al-Walīd. And weep, if you weep, over ʿAqīl, And weep for Ḥārith, lion of lions. And weep for them, and do not name all together, For Abū Ḥukaymah has no equal. Indeed, after them men have risen to lordship, And were it not for the day of Badr, they would not have become lords. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said: He means Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, who was the head of Quraysh in their march to Uḥud. The Messenger of God ﷺ had supplicated against this al-Aswad that God Most High would blind his sight and bereave him of his children. God Most High answered, with blindness preceding to the sight first, then on the day of Badr he was struck with the loss of those of his children whom he sent away, and so the answer of God Most High to His Messenger ﷺ concerning him was fulfilled.
