The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ The Najāshī's joy at the Battle of Badr Al-Bayhaqī narrated, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd, from Jābir, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—a man from the people of Ṣanʿāʾ—who said: One day the Najāshī sent for Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib and his companions, and they entered upon him while he was in a house, wearing worn-out clothes and sitting on the dust. Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib said: We feared for him when we saw him in that state, but when he saw the concern in our faces, he said: "I bring you glad tidings of what will please you. A spy of mine has come to me from the direction of your land and informed me that God—Exalted is He—has granted victory to His Prophet ﷺ, and that his enemies So-and-so and So-and-so have been destroyed. They met in a valley called Badr, abounding in arāk trees. It is as if I am looking at it—I used to graze my master's camels there; he was a man from Banū Ḍamrah." Jaʿfar said to him: "Why are you sitting on the dust with no carpet beneath you, and wearing these worn-out clothes?" He said: "We find in what God—Exalted is He—revealed to ʿĪsā ﷺ: 'It is incumbent upon the servants of God—Exalted is He—to bring about humility before God—Mighty and Majestic is He—whenever He brings about a blessing for them.' So when God—Exalted is He—brought about victory for His Prophet ﷺ, I brought about this humility for Him."
