✧ He saw Abu Rafi', the freed slave of the Prophet ﷺ, pass by al-Hasan b. 'Ali while he was praying standing, having tied his braid at the back of his neck. Abu Rafi' untied it, and al-Hasan turned to him angrily. Abu Rafi' said: 'Attend to your prayer and do not be angry, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "That is the devil's share," meaning the devil's seat, meaning the place where his braid was tied.'
Notes
machine translationThis ḥadīth has a sound chain (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād), and the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim] relied upon all of its narrators except ʿImrān. ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī said: "ʿImrān b. Mūsā b. ʿAmr b. Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ al-Qurashī is the brother of Ayyūb b. Mūsā; Ibn Jurayj and Ibn ʿUlayyah also narrated from him." Sound (ṣaḥīḥ).

machine translationIbn Jurayj narrates it from ʿImrān b. Mūsā, who is the brother of Ayyūb b. Mūsā b. ʿAmr b. Saʿīd, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from his father, from Abū Rāfiʿ. Mukhawwal b. Rāshid narrated it from Abū Saʿīd al-Madanī, who is Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Abū Rāfiʿ, and he did not say in it "from his father". Zuhayr b. Muʿāwiyah and Shuʿbah said that from Mukhawwal. There is disagreement about al-Thawrī: Muʾammal b. Ismāʿīl narrated it from al-Thawrī, from Mukhawwal, from Abū Saʿīd, from Abū Rāfiʿ, from Umm Salamah, and he erred in mentioning Umm Salamah in it, while others do not mention Umm Salamah in it. The ḥadīth of ʿImrān b. Mūsā is the soundest of them in chain.
machine translationMuʾammal erred in mentioning Umm Salamah, while others do not mention her. ʿImrān b. Mūsā narrated it from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from his father, from Abū Rāfiʿ, and it is the soundest of the two in chain. In another place in the al-ʿIlal he said: This is a ḥadīth narrated by Abū Ḥudhayfah and Muʾammal b. Ismāʿīl from al-Thawrī, from Mukhawwal, from al-Maqburī, from Abū Rāfiʿ, from Umm Salamah, while others narrate it from al-Thawrī, from Mukhawwal, and do not mention Umm Salamah. Likewise Shuʿbah and Sharīk narrated it from Mukhawwal, and that is the correct version.
