✧ When Ibn al-Zubayr was besieged and the doors of the mosque were fortified against the people of Syria, he heard two of his freedmen behind him speaking. He turned to them and said, “No one has followed the scriptures as I have followed them. I have read the scriptures and heard the hadiths, and I found everything false except what is in the Book of Allah, Exalted is He.” Then he went out and touched the Corner, then entered upon his mother Asma’ and kissed her and kissed between the veil and the face above the forehead. She said, “What sound do I hear?” It was said to her, “The people of Syria.” She said, “Are they all Muslims?” It was said to her, “Yes, they claim so.” She said, “I have seen Islam; if they gathered over a sheep, they would not eat it.” Then she said, “O my son, die honorably and do not surrender.” ʿAbd Allah said, “Where are the people of Egypt?” They said to him, “At the gate, the gate of Banu Jumaʿ,” and it was the gate with the most people. He charged against them, and they were routed as far as the market. Khubayb was striking them with the sword from behind them, saying, “Charge!” and no one entered upon him. Then he charged again and they were routed. When they saw that, they brought in a black man. When they saw him, they turned to deceive him. The black man entered until he was between the curtains of the Kaʿbah. When he came to him, Ibn al-Zubayr went out to him and struck him, cutting off both his legs. He began to struggle along, then he fell, and he did not turn to him until a stone came and hit him near the ear, and he fell, and they killed him.
