✧ We were sitting one night with Abdullah while he was teaching us the Quran. A man asked him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, did you ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ how many caliphs this nation will have?" Abdullah said: "No one has asked me about this since I came to Iraq before you." He said: "We asked him, and he said: 'Twelve, the number of the chieftains of the Children of Israel.'" I cannot permit myself to be lenient in this book regarding narrating from Mujalid and his peers, may Allah have mercy on them. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
