✧ When Mu'awiyah died, 'Abdullah b. al-Zubayr delayed obedience to Yazid b. Mu'awiyah and openly reviled him. That reached Yazid, so he sent orders that he be brought. It was said to Ibn al-Zubayr: He is having shackles made for you of gold; you will drape a garment over them and fulfill his oath, for reconciliation is better. He said: May Allah not fulfill his oath. Then he said: [bahr al-basit] I will not soften a fingertip for other than the truth, until the stone softens for the tooth of the chewer. Then he said: By Allah, a blow with a sword in honor is dearer to me than a blow with a whip in humiliation. Then he called people to himself and openly opposed Yazid b. Mu'awiyah. Yazid b. Mu'awiyah sent against him Muslim b. 'Uqbah al-Muzani with the army of the people of Syria, and ordered him to fight the people of Madinah, and when he finished that, to march to Makkah. Muslim b. 'Uqbah entered Madinah, and the remnants of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fled from him that day. He rampaged there and went to excess in killing. Then he left, and when he was partway to Makkah, he died and appointed Husayn b. Numayr al-Kindi as his successor, saying to him: O pack-saddle of a donkey, beware of the tricks of Quraysh and deal with them only with hypocrisy then severity. Husayn went on until he reached Makkah and fought Ibn al-Zubayr there for days.
