حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الصَّفَّارُ ثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بَحْرِ بْنِ بَرِّيٍّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ السَّبِيعِيِّ ثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ

أَنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ كَتَبَ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ أَنِّي قَدْ بُعِثْتُ إِلَيْكَ بِسِلْسِلَةٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَقَيْدٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَجَامِعَةٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَحَلَفْتُ لَتَأْتِيَنِّي فِي ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَأَلْقَى الْكِتَابَ وَقَالَ « [البحر البسيط] وَلَا أَلِينُ لِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ أُنْمُلَةً حَتَّى يَلِينَ لِضِرْسِ الْمَاضِغِ الْحَجَرُ»

✧ Yazid b. Mu'awiyah wrote to 'Abdullah b. al-Zubayr: I have sent you a chain of silver, a shackle of gold, and a fetter of silver, and I have sworn that you will come to me in them. He threw the letter aside and said: [bahr al-basit] I will not soften a fingertip for other than the truth, until the stone softens for the tooth of the chewer.
