✧ "We, the Ansar, requested from 'Umar or 'Uthman—Ibn Abi al-Zinad was uncertain—so we went with 'Abdullah b. 'Abbas and a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with him. Ibn 'Abbas spoke, and they spoke, mentioning the Ansar and their merits. The governor made excuses." Hassan said: "It was a serious matter that we sought." He said: "He kept debating with them until they stood up and excused him, except 'Abdullah b. 'Abbas, who said: 'No, by Allah, the Ansar have a high station. They supported and sheltered.' He mentioned their virtue and said: 'This is the poet of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his defender.' 'Abdullah kept arguing with comprehensive words that closed every need for him, until he had no choice but to fulfill our need." He said: "We left, and Allah ﷻ had fulfilled our need through his speech. I took 'Abdullah by the hand, praising him and praying for him. I passed through the mosque with the group who had been with him, and they did not achieve what he achieved. I said, so that they could hear: 'He was more deserving of us than you.' They said: 'Indeed.' I said to 'Abdullah: 'By Allah, it is the remnants of prophethood, and its heir is Ahmad ﷺ, who was more deserving of it than you.'" Hassan said: "And I point to 'Abdullah: [al-Bahr al-Tawil] When he speaks, he leaves no room for a speaker, with eloquent words that show no gap between them. He suffices and heals what is in the chests, and leaves no one with a purpose in speech, serious or jest. I ascended to the heights without hardship, and reached their peaks, not lowly nor high."
