✧ That the people of Kufa, such-and-such number of them have recited the Qur'an. So he said 'Allahu Akbar,' may Allah have mercy on him. I said, 'Have they differed?' He said, 'Uff! What do you know?' He became angry, so I went to my home. Then he sent for me afterward, and I made an excuse to him. He said, 'I adjure you not to come?' So I went to him, and he said, 'You said something.' I said, 'I seek Allah's forgiveness; I will not return to anything after it.' He said, 'I adjure you not to repeat to me what you said.' I said, 'I said: It was written to me that such-and-such number have recited the Qur'an, and I said, Have they differed?' He said, 'From what did you know that?' I said, 'I recited: {And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart} [al-Baqarah: 204] until it ended at {And Allah does not like corruption} [al-Baqarah: 205]. When they do that, the companion of the Qur'an will not be patient. Then I recited: {When it is said to him, 'Fear Allah,' pride in sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hell, and how wretched is the resting place. And of the people is he who sells himself seeking the pleasure of Allah. And Allah is kind to His servants.}' He said, 'You have spoken the truth, by the One in whose hand is my soul.'
