حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ أَنْبَأَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ أَنْبَأَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ وَرَجُلٌ آخَرُ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ أَبِي أَنَسٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ مَوْلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ

أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ كَانَ عَلَى سَرِيَّةٍ وَأَنَّهُمْ أَصَابَهُمْ بَرْدٌ شَدِيدٌ لَمْ يَرَ مِثْلَهُ فَخَرَجَ لِصَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدِ احْتَلَمْتُ الْبَارِحَةَ وَلَكِنِّي وَاللَّهِ مَا رَأَيْتُ بَرْدًا مِثْلَ هَذَا هَلْ مَرَّ عَلَى وُجُوهِكُمْ مِثْلُهُ؟ قَالُوا لَا فَغَسَلَ مَغَابِنَهُ وَتَوَضَّأَ وُضُوءَهُ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بِهِمْ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَأَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «كَيْفَ وَجَدْتُمْ عَمْرًا وَصَحَابَتَهُ لَكُمْ؟» فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا وَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى بِنَا وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ فَأَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى عَمْرٍو فَسَأَلَهُ فَأَخْبَرَهُ بِذَلِكَ وَبِالَّذِي لَقِيَ مِنَ الْبَرْدِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَالَ {وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ} [النساء 29] وَلَوِ اغْتَسَلْتُ مُتُّ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى عَمْرٍو

✧ 'Amr b. al-'As was in command of a military detachment, and they were struck by severe cold the like of which he had never seen. He went out for the dawn prayer and said: "By Allah, I had a wet dream last night, but by Allah, I have never seen cold like this. Has anything like it ever come upon your faces?" They said: "No." So he washed his private parts, performed ablution as for prayer, and then led them in prayer. When he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: "How did you find 'Amr and his companions as leaders for you?" They praised him well and said: "O Messenger of Allah, he led us in prayer while he was in a state of major ritual impurity." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for 'Amr and asked him, and he informed him of that and of the cold he had encountered. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah said: 'And do not kill yourselves' [Quran 4:29]. If I had bathed, I would have died." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed at 'Amr.
