Translation

✧ I was suffering from a severe, prolonged, and heavy istihadah, so I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ask his ruling and inform him. I found him in the house of my sister Zaynab bt. Jahsh. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman suffering from istihadah with a severe, prolonged, and heavy flow. What do you think about it, for it has prevented me from praying and fasting? He said: “I prescribe for you cotton, for it absorbs the blood.” She said: It is more than that; it gushes profusely. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I will command you two things; whichever you do will suffice you for the other, and if you are able to do both, you know best.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “This is only a kick from the kicks of Satan. Consider your menstruation to be six or seven days according to Allah’s knowledge ﷻ, then bathe until you see that you have become pure and cleansed. Then pray for twenty-three or twenty-four nights and their days, and fast, for that will suffice you. And do likewise every month, as women menstruate and become pure according to their menstrual and purity periods. And if you are able to delay the Zuhr prayer and hasten the ‘Asr prayer, then bathe and combine the two prayers, Zuhr and ‘Asr; and delay the Maghrib prayer and hasten the ‘Isha’ prayer, then bathe and combine the two prayers, then do so and fast if you are able to do that.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “And this is the more preferable of the two matters to me.” “The two Shaykhs agreed on transmitting the hadith of istihadah from the hadith of al-Zuhri and Hisham b. ‘Urwah from A’ishah that Fatimah bt. Abi Hujaysh asked the Prophet ﷺ, and it does not contain these words found in the hadith of Hamnah bt. Jahsh. And it is the transmission of ‘Abdullah b. Muhammad b. ‘Aqil b. Abi Talib, who is among the nobles of Quraysh and among the most prolific transmitters, except that they did not use him as proof.” Its supporting witnesses include the hadith of al-Sha’bi from Qamir, the wife of Masruq, from A’ishah, and the hadith of Abu ‘Aqil Yahya b. al-Mutawakkil from Buhayyah from A’ishah, and mentioning them here would be lengthy. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
