أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْغِفَارِيُّ بِمَرْوَ ثَنَا عَبْدَانُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَافِظُ
سَمِعْتُ أَحْمَدَ بْنَ شَيْبَانَ يَقُولُ «الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو وَرَافِعُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو وَعُلَيَّهُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو صَحِبُوا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ ثُمَّ إِنَّ زِيَادًا وَلِيَ الْحُكْمَ عَلَى خُرَاسَانَ وَكَانَ سَبَبُ وَفَاتِهِ أَنَّهُ دَعَا عَلَى نَفْسِهِ وَهُوَ بِمَرْوَ فِي كِتَابٍ قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِ وَرَدَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ زِيَادٍ وَآخَرَ مِنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ فَاسْتُجِيبَتْ دَعْوَتُهُ وَمَاتَ بِمَرْوَ وَكَانَ مَاتَ قَبْلَهُ بُرَيْدَةُ الْأَسْلَمِيُّ فَدُفِنَا جَمِيعًا فِي مَقْبَرَةِ حُصَيْنٍ بِمَرْوَ مُقَابِلَ حَمَّامِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ السُّكَّرِيِّ قَدْ زُرْتُ قَبْرَيْهِمَا» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ I heard Ahmad b. Shayban say: “Al-Hakam b. ‘Amr, Rafi‘ b. ‘Amr, and ‘Ulayyah b. ‘Amr accompanied the Prophet ﷺ. Then Ziyad appointed al-Hakam over Khurasan. The cause of his death was that he prayed against himself while he was in Marw, regarding a letter that was read to him and sent back to him from Ziyad, and another from Mu‘awiyah. His supplication was answered, and he died in Marw. Buraydah al-Aslami had died before him, and they were both buried together in the cemetery of Husayn in Marw, opposite the bathhouse of Abu Hamzah al-Sukkari. I have visited their graves.” Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
