أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ التَّاجِرُ ثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ السَّهْمِيُّ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ الْعَسْقَلَانِيُّ ثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ أَبِي حَاجِبٍ قَالَ

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْغِفَارِيِّ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَسُولُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَقُولُ لَكَ إِنَّكَ أَحَقُّ مَنْ أَعَانَنَا عَلَى هَذَا الْأَمْرِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ خَلِيلِي ابْنَ عَمِّكَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِذَا كَانَ الْأَمْرُ هَكَذَا أَوْ مِثْلَ هَذَا أَنِ اتَّخِذْ سَيْفًا مِنْ خَشَبٍ»

✧ I was with al-Hakam b. ‘Amr al-Ghifari when a messenger from ‘Ali b. Abi Talib came to him and said, “The Commander of the Faithful says to you: You are the most deserving of those who should help us in this matter.” He replied, “I heard my close friend, your cousin, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘When the matter is like this—or similar to this—then take a sword of wood.’”
