✧ That he should reserve for himself the white and the yellow (silver and gold) and not divide among the Muslims any gold or silver. So al-Hakam wrote to him: “To proceed: You wrote mentioning the letter of the Commander of the Faithful. I found the Book of Allah prior to the letter of the Commander of the Faithful. I swear by Allah, if the heavens and the earth were closed off against a servant, and he feared Allah, He would make for him a way out from between them. Peace.” Al-Hakam ordered a crier to proclaim: “Go early to your spoils,” and he divided it among them. When al-Hakam did what he did in dividing the spoils, Mu‘awiyah sent someone who shackled and imprisoned him, and he died in his shackles and was buried in them, and he said, “I will be a disputant.” Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
