✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ encamped near Khaybar, he said: 'Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love.' When the next day came, a group of his companions stretched their necks for it. But he called 'Ali, who was suffering from eye inflammation, spat in his eyes, gave him the banner, and the people advanced with him. They met the people of Khaybar, and there was Marhab before them reciting rajaz, saying: [Rajaz meter] Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, armed with sharp weapons, a tried hero. When swords come forth blazing, I thrust at times and at times I strike. He and 'Ali exchanged two blows, and 'Ali struck him on his head until the sword bit into his molars, and the people of the army heard the sound of his strike. He killed him, and the last of the people had not arrived before it was opened for the first of them. 'This is a large chapter that I have included in the chapters.'
