حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الصَّغَانِيُّ ثَنَا أَبُو الْجَوَّابِ ثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ عَنِ الْأَشْتَرِ قَالَ ابْتَدَأَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ قَالَ

مَا أَتَى عَلَيَّ يَوْمٌ قَطُّ كَانَ أَعْظَمَ عَلَيَّ مِنْ شَأْنِ عَمَّارٍ لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ بَعَثَنِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي أُنَاسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ وَأَمَّرَنِي عَلَيْهِمْ وَكَانَ فِي الْقَوْمِ عَمَّارٌ فَأَصَبْنَا قَوْمًا فِيهِمْ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَكَلِّمْنِي فِيهِمْ عَمَّارٌ وَنَاسٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ قَالُوا خَلِّ سَبِيلَهُمْ قُلْتُ لَا وَاللَّهِ لَا أَفْعَلُ حَتَّى يَرَاهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَيَرَى فِيهِمْ رَأْيَهُ فَغَضِبَ عَلَيَّ عَمَّارٌ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ اسْتَأْذَنْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَهُوَ يَسْتَخْبِرُنِي وَأَنَا أُحَدِّثُهُ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ عَمَّارٌ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ فَدَخَلَ عَمَّارٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلَمْ تَرَ خَالِدًا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَفَعَلَ كَذَا فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ لَوْلَا مَجْلِسُكَ مَا سَبَّنِي ابْنُ سُمَيَّةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «يَا عَمَّارُ اخْرُجْ» فَخَرَجَ عَمَّارٌ وَهُوَ يَبْكِي وَيَقُولُ مَا نَصَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى خَالِدٍ فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَلَا أَجَبْتَ الرَّجُلَ» قُلْتُ مَا مَنَعَنِي إِنْ أَجَبْتُهُ إِلَّا مَحْقَرَةً لَهُ فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ مَنْ يَبْغَضْ عَمَّارًا يَبْغَضْهُ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ يَسُبَّ عَمَّارًا يَسُبَّهُ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ يُحَقِّرْ عَمَّارًا يُحَقِّرْهُ اللَّهُ» فَخَرَجْتُ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَطْلُبُ إِلَى عَمَّارٍ حَتَّى اسْتَغْفَرَ لِي

✧ No day ever came upon me that was greater upon me than the matter of 'Ammar. On the day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me with some of his companions and put me in command over them, and among the people was 'Ammar, we came upon a people among whom were a Muslim household. 'Ammar and some Muslims spoke to me about them, saying, "Let them go." I said, "No, by Allah, I will not do so until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sees them and forms his opinion about them." 'Ammar became angry with me. When I arrived, I asked permission to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was asking me for news while I was telling him. Then 'Ammar asked permission, and he granted it to him. 'Ammar entered and said, "O Messenger of Allah, did you not see what Khalid did, such and such?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, were it not for your gathering, Ibn Sumayyah would not have reviled me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O 'Ammar, leave." So 'Ammar left, weeping and saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not support me against Khalid." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Did you not answer the man?" I said, "Nothing prevented me from answering him except contempt for him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry and said: "Whoever hates 'Ammar, Allah hates him; whoever reviles 'Ammar, Allah reviles him; and whoever belittles 'Ammar, Allah belittles him." So I went out from the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and continued to seek 'Ammar until he sought forgiveness for me.
