حَدَّثَنَا بِذَلِكَ أَبُو عَمْرٍو مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَطَرٍ الْعَدْلُ الْمَأْمُونُ مِنْ أَصْلِ كِتَابِهِ ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَوَّارٍ الْهَاشِمِيُّ ثَنَا مِنْجَابُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْأَجْلَحِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ يَزِيدَ الْفَقِيرِ قَالَ مِنْجَابٌ وَسَمِعْتُ فَضْلَ بْنَ فَضَالَةَ يُحَدِّثُ بِهِ جَمِيعًا عَنْ أَبِي حَرْبِ بْنِ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ الدِّيلِيِّ قَالَ
شَهِدْتُ عَلِيًّا وَالزُّبَيْرَ لَمَّا رَجَعَ الزُّبَيْرُ عَلَى دَابَّتِهِ يَشُقُّ الصُّفُوفَ فَعَرَضَ لَهُ ابْنُهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ مَا لَكَ؟ فَقَالَ ذَكَرَ لِي عَلِيٌّ حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَتُقَاتِلَنَّهُ وَأَنْتَ ظَالِمٌ لَهُ» فَلَا أُقَاتِلُهُ قَالَ وَلِلْقِتَالِ جِئْتَ؟ إِنَّمَا جِئْتَ لِتُصْلِحَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَيُصْلِحُ اللَّهُ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ بِكَ قَالَ قَدْ حَلَفْتُ أَنْ لَا أُقَاتِلَ قَالَ فَأَعْتِقْ غُلَامَكَ جِرْجِسَ وَقِفْ حَتَّى تُصْلِحَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ قَالَ فَأَعْتَقَ غُلَامَهُ جِرْجِسَ وَوَقَفَ فَاخْتَلَفَ أَمَرُ النَّاسِ فَذَهَبَ عَلَى فَرَسِهِ

✧ I witnessed Ali and Zubayr when Zubayr returned on his mount, piercing through the ranks. His son Abdullah confronted him and said, 'What is the matter with you?' He said, 'Ali reminded me of a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, "You will fight him while you are an oppressor to him," so I will not fight him.' He said, 'And did you come for fighting? You came only to reconcile between the people, and Allah will set this matter right through you.' He said, 'I have sworn not to fight.' He said, 'Then free your slave Girgis and stop until you reconcile between the people.' So he freed his slave Girgis and stopped, but the people's affair became confused, so he went on his horse.
