✧ Abd Allah b. al-Abbas entered upon Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan while the clans of Quraysh had gathered in circles around him. Mu'awiyah asked him about their forefathers until he said: 'What do you say about your father al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib?' He said: 'May Allah have mercy on Abu al-Fadl. By Allah, he was the uncle of the Prophet of Allah and the delight of the eye of the Messenger of Allah, the master of uncles and close friends, the grandfather of grandfathers; his fathers were the most generous and his ancestors the most courageous. He had knowledge of affairs, adorned by forbearance and elevated by understanding. Every sharp sword earned his spoils, and every opposing coward earned his opinion. Close friends vanished at the mention of his virtue, and lineages receded at the mention of his clan. He was the keeper of the House, the water-giving, the lineage, and the kinship. And why should he not be so? How could he not be so? The planner of his policy was the most noble of those who planned and the most understanding of those who grew up from Quraysh and rode.'
