✧ We, the family of al-Abbas, had entered Islam, and we were concealing our Islam. I was a servant of al-Abbas, carving wooden bowls. When Quraysh marched to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Badr, we began to await news. Then al-Daman al-Khuza'i came to us with the news, and we found strength in ourselves, and what came to us of the news of the victory of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pleased us. By Allah, I was sitting in the portico of Zamzam carving bowls, and Umm al-Fadl was sitting with me, and we were pleased with the news of the victory of the Messenger of Allah, when the news reached us about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then the wicked Abu Lahab came dragging his feet, and Allah had disgraced and humiliated him because of the news that came to him, until he sat on the rope of the room. The people said: 'This is Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith, he has arrived.' The people gathered around him. Abu Lahab said to him: 'Come to me, O son of my brother.' He sat before him. He said: 'Tell me about the people.' He said: 'Yes, by Allah, these people—when we met them, we gave them our shoulders; they placed their weapons in us wherever they wished. By Allah, with that, I do not blame the people. We met white men on piebald horses. By Allah, they did not leave anything.' He said: 'Then I lifted the rope of the room and said: Those, by Allah, are the angels.' He said: 'Abu Lahab raised his hand and struck my face with a severe blow, and I fought with him, but I was a weak man. He overpowered me and threw me to the ground and knelt on my chest and beat me. Umm al-Fadl went to one of the poles of the tent, took it, and said: You thought him weak because his master is absent from him, and she struck him with the pole on his head, causing a severe wound. He stood up dragging his feet, humiliated. Allah struck him with the adasah, and by Allah, he remained only seven days until he died. His two sons left him in his house for three days without burying him until he stank. Quraysh used to fear this adasah as they feared the plague, until a man from Quraysh said to them: Woe to you both, are you not ashamed? Your father has stunk in his house and you do not bury him. They said: We fear the infection of this sore. He said: Go, and I will help you with him. By Allah, they did not wash him except by throwing water from a distance, not coming near him. Then they carried him to upper Makkah, leaned him against a wall, and then threw stones on him. Husayn b. Abdullah b. Ubaydullah is weak.
