أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الصَّفَّارُ ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ الضَّبِّيُّ ثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ عَنْ حَبَّةَ الْعُرَنِيِّ قَالَ

قَرَأْتُ فِي كِتَابِ عُمَرَ إِلَى أَهْلِ الْيَمَنِ وَالْكُوفَةِ «أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَأَنْتُمْ رَأْسُ الْعَرَبِ وَجُمْجُمَتُهَا وَأَنْتُمْ سَهْمِي الَّذِي أَرْمِي بِهِ إِنْ جَاءَ شَيْءٌ مِنْ هَا هُنَا وَهَا هُنَا وَقَدْ بَعَثْتُ إِلَيْكُمْ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ وَاخْتَرْتُهُ لَكُمْ وآثَرْتُكُمْ بِهِ عَلَى نَفْسِي» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ I read in ʿUmar’s letter to the people of Yemen and Kufa: “To proceed: you are the head of the Arabs and their cranium, and you are my arrow which I shoot with, whether something comes from here or there. I have sent ʿAbdullāh to you and chosen him for you, preferring you over myself with him.” Al-Dhahabī remained silent about it in the Talkhīṣ.
